Assistant Professor in Anthropological Archaeology - Department of Anthropology

Summary of Job Duties:

The Department of Anthropology in the Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences at the University of Arkansas invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Anthropological Archaeology to start in August 2025. This is a standard nine-month faculty appointment. This is one of two archaeology positions currently being advertised in the department; applicants wishing to be considered for both must submit materials for each position separately. 

The geographic and temporal areas of specialization are open. We seek candidates who will complement and/or expand upon existing program strengths. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an active field and/or laboratory research program, which is supported by extramural funding, leads to peer-reviewed publications, and provides impactful undergraduate and graduate educational experiences. Candidates should also demonstrate their commitment to a scholarly environment for all through teaching, mentorship, research, and service. 

We especially invite applications from candidates who are committed to developing collaborative research programs within the Department of Anthropology and with colleagues in cognate environmental and area studies departments and programs, and with other centers and units in the University of Arkansas system such as the Arkansas Archeological Survey, the University of Arkansas Stable Isotope Lab, the Center for Advanced Spatial Technologies, and the Arkansas Humanities Center. About the Department:
The Department of Anthropology examines similarities and differences among people, lifestyles, and world views through time by the study of artifacts and material remains, the evolution of humankind and other primates, and issues such as ethnicity, gender, class, social inequity and religion. Courses help students explore many approaches to the various subfields. The Department of Anthropology at the University of Arkansas currently has 12 tenured or tenure track faculty, spanning the subdisciplines of archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology. Duties will include:
• 40% Teaching
• 40% Research
• 20% Service


Qualifications:

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Ph.D. in anthropology or a closely related field from an accredited institution of higher education conferred by the start of appointment

An active research program in anthropological archaeology

 

Preferred Qualifications:

Demonstrated theoretical and methodological expertise that complements or expands on existing program foci

A strong record of national/international scholarship including extramural funding and peer-reviewed publications

Demonstrated experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses and ability develop new curricula to complement and expand the current course catalog 

Demonstrated ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students in independent research

Demonstrated commitment to cultivating a scholarly environment for all through teaching, mentoring, research, outreach, and service
