Oracle

Software Enginnering Intern

June - September 2021 • Naples, FL

What I liked

I had mentors and managers who helped me transition into my role and shared their experiences. I enjoyed the work and actually got to see the impact my code had to the software.

What I wish was different

I wish the experience wasn't remote and I could have met the entire team in person.

Software Engineering Intern

June - September 2020 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

Great working environment within a big corporation; which gives you options to expand and grow a lot in your career. Good work-life balance and great manager(s). I was challenged as an intern and that helped because I learned a lot in such a short time. Got hands on "real" projects.

What I wish was different

I wish they offered a return right at the end of internship, without having to later go through the same interview process for full-time positions.

Advice

Apply online on Oracle's website. Keep a higher GPA as that seems to be one of their initial requirements along with taking some coursework like Data Structures, OOP, Operating Systems etc. and having prior experience definitely helps. Oracle moves pretty fast in hiring process so be prepared that after a recruiter contacts you initially, you'll probably get scheduled interviews soon after that. Lastly, just be honest about yourself and what you know - Oracle seems to appreciate that.

Marketing Intern

June 2020 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

I absolutely loved my internship experience. We had so many events, workshops, and executive chats and I was able to maximize my time throughout my internship. It was really carefully crafted and perfectly fit the virtual environment despite how difficult it is to make virtual settings entertaining.

What I wish was different

I really wish I was able to be with everyone in person and experience what I did in-person but I can't complain!

Advice

Your opportunity is coming! Work hard - revise your resume, LI, cover letters often and keep seeing out new opportunities to get yourself closer and closer to what you want to do.

UX Researcher Intern

June - December 2019 • Burlington, MA

What I liked

I learned a lot, and got a lot of independence when it came to running my own usability tests and other projects. I worked extensively with multiple different teams with different areas of expertise; It was great being able to take into account the many different perspectives of developers, designers, product managers, the documentation team, management, and end-users(!) as an intern. The people were very friendly and were willing to help when I asked.

What I wish was different

I wish that there had been a bit more guidance during one of my more nebulous projects. Part of this was definitely a communication problem on my end, of not knowing exactly what help to ask for. But I think that there were some ways the team could have provided more of the pertinent information that was helpful to running my usability tests. This, along with the difficulty of the project, caused me a lot of stress that I could have avoided by asking more and better questions. I also wish that I used my project management tool more diligently since the beginning of the internship, it helped me juggle a lot of things when I used it.

Advice

Don't be afraid to ask for help, the UX team there is a very collaborative and iterative one. It's a safe place to receive and incorporate the feedback you're given, so take advantage of this.

Traveling, challenging work enviorment

What I wish was different

n/a happy with my job

Advice

If you feel overwhelmed with a challenging new job. Stick it out if it's not hurting your mental or physical health. I started contracting for the company nearly 5 years ago, and I now work directly for one of the biggest tech companies in the world. Hard work, and passion pays off.

Cloud Product Release Intern

June - September 2019 • Rocklin, CA

What I liked

I really enjoyed the environment, getting to know my team and the overall team dynamic, and being given a lot of tasks to do independently.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been other interns around the office. In my building, I was the only summer intern and while it didn’t impact my work, it would have been fun to have other college-aged students around.

Advice

Ask lots of questions. People are willing to help because they want the work done tight the first time around. And if you can learn more about what your team or company does in the process, it’s definitely worth the time to ask!

Financial Planning and Analysis Intern

May - August 2019 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

Working as an intern at Oracle gave me some phenomenal exposure to the inter-workings of a massively successful technology corporation. As a Finance intern, I gained hands on experience with modeling and forecasting, which will likely prove incredibly useful over the course of my career. The mentors and supervisors in my internship program were beyond talented, and were very effective educators throughout the course of my work. In addition, I had the unique opportunity to work with Oracle's Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis team on a daily basis, giving me valuable insight into how the work world functions, and what expectations are in a corporate environment. I loved coming into work everyday and tackling a new challenge that I had never seen before. My experience allowed me to learn by doing rather than learn by watching, which I am incredibly grateful for.

What I wish was different

Frankly, nothing. While I may have been able to make good use of a short training period, the overall experience of the internship is irreplaceable. Oracle focuses on teaching their interns by giving them the tools they need for success, and allowing them to deal with ambiguity and uncertainty.

Advice

Don't sell yourself short. If you say you can't get the internship, you won't. You need to believe in the skills you have and demonstrate your unique qualities to a prospective employer to be an attractive candidate.

Software Engineering Intern

June - August 2019 • Broomfield, CO

What I liked

I loved being placed on a team of full-time senior engineers and working on a project that the team would productionize at the end of my internship.

What I wish was different

I wish there had been more opportunity to participate in outside work events (happy hours, dinners, outings, etc)

Advice

Do not be afraid to ask questions; senior engineers and managers may seem unapproachable but they are always there to help you succeed!

Tax Intern

June - September 2018 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

I found it very rewarding to work alongside such accomplished individuals. It was really motivating to hear their advice and struggles in regards to their career.

What I wish was different

I wish that there was a more formal intern program. At times I felt like I had a lot of downtime which could have been used more productively. It would have been nice to have a mentor to meet with and to have met with the other interns more often.

Advice

My piece of advice would be to not burn any bridges in the work place and throughout life in general. Everyone is connected to everyone, especially in the bay area, so be good to people and they will be good to you (hopefully).

Business Development Representative

August 2018 • Chicago, IL

What I liked

I have been gaining so much experience in sales/marketing. I love this job and can't wait to make a career out of it!

What I wish was different

I feel like I haven't taken full advantage of learning opportunities. I plan to take advantage of it moving forward. I think it's very important to come out of every workday learning something that you didn't know the day before.

Advice

Never give up! It took me a while to find the job/career path I wanted and I began to get frustrated/ lose motivation. Keep trying, keep building your network, and your dream career will fall into place.

UX/UI Designer

June - September 2017 • Redwood City, CA

What I liked

I loved the experience that I gained at this internship and felt like I was treated as a full time employee so that I really got a feel for the company.

What I wish was different

The only thing I would change is that my manager worked remotely from Minnesota, so I didn't get to see her that often. Most of the other interns had their managers in the office, though.

Advice

Make as many contacts as you can and ask them individually to get coffee. I learned the most valuable information about the company culture and different positions when I did this.

Technical Support Intern

May - August 2018 • Lehi, UT

What I liked

I was included as part of the team. I went to team meetings, lunches, activities, etc. I was able to participate in the Salt Lake Corporate Games competitions as part of Oracle's team. I received several one-on-one discussions with my manager on my role here and was given work to do. I could ask for help when needed.

What I wish was different

I finished my work quickly and had to keep asking for more work once I had completed what I had been given. This was mostly because the managers who gave me work were very busy, which makes sense. I still learned a ton and enjoyed the internship!

Advice

Have fun! There are bocce ball sets, a ping pong table, and foosball. Enjoy your lunch hour.
