RSM US LLP

Public Accounting Intern

December 2016 - March 2017 • San Jose, CA

What I liked

I got hands on experience during a busy season. I got to go to chicago for national training and the firm was very flexible with my school schedule.

What I wish was different

Believe it or not I wish I would've taken a semester off to do the internship full-time. Having started the job now I still feel slightly behind the normal learning curve.

Advice

Take any and all internship opportunities you get. Find office tours and get in the face of people you want to work for. It will lead to a job.

What I liked

Bonding with your hiring class is probably the best thing that will happen in your first year.

What I wish was different

Have not worked long enough to share yet.

Advice

Make sure you have an open mind and dedication to also put in the work to study for the CPA after working full time.

Assurance intern

June - August 2019 • McLean, VA

What I liked

I loved the office and people I worked for. The work environment and culture at RSM is uplifting for an accounting firm. My fellow internship friends were amazing and we all hung out out of work a lot. I loved the work environment and how the employees treated us.

What I wish was different

I can’t wish much more. I was on one client for 3 weeks I do wish I was on a couple for weeks at a time. My internship experience I was on 3 different clients which was nice.

Advice

My piece of advice is to go in with an open attitude and just be very willing to learn. Everyone wants you to succeed!

Value Added Tax(VAT) Intern

June 2020 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I enjoyed learning about what it’s like working at RSM and their culture.

What I wish was different

Since my internship was moved online, we mainly focused on what RSM has to offer their employees. I would have liked to learn more about VAT. I was able to shadow my job for a day and had a lunch meeting with a senior manager to learn more about what I would be doing on a day to day basis.

Advice

Make sure the culture/ ethics at the place you intend to work are something you agree with and want to be apart of.

Accounting and Financial Outsourcing Intern

October 2019 • Blue Bell, PA

What I liked

I liked that I was able to work from home due to the pandemic. It enabled me to take more time to do things like study for my summer courses. Plus I liked that the team was so friendly and I had many different people to ask for help with certain projects if I were to get stuck.

What I wish was different

I wish that projects would have been different from one another. Most days I felt as if I was doing exactly what I have done the day before, other than that, I would not have anything different.

Advice

Advice I would share about this experience is, do not be afraid to ask questions for help. The specific department I was in, worked with a lot of different companies and each company had its own way of doing it. Of course, there was so many different rules and procedures to follow that it would sometimes feel confusing on what to do.

Audit Intern

January - August 2020 • Cincinnati, OH

What I liked

I liked the ability to experience what a busy season within a public accounting firm would look like and how it would work. I got to learn how to go through an audit process with several different accounts for different clients.

What I wish was different

I honestly don’t wish to change any of experiences I encountered.

Advice

I’d say go in ready to learn as much as possible and to not be hesitant to ask questions. All the employees are very helpful and would rather you ask them questions.

Business Tax Entities Intern

June - August 2021 • Davenport, IA

What I liked

The opportunities and culture at RSM stand out amongst large public accounting firms. Working with primarily middle-market clients as opposed to Fortune 500 companies allows you so much more exposure to all aspects of client work. Additionally, RSM cares about its employees, and this was apparent throughout my whole internship. Employees and partners at all levels made it known I could ask them for help with anything I needed. There were multiple service/social events during my summer with the firm, and I never encountered a person I didn't like. I am very excited to return to RSM full time as a Tax Associate next fall!

What I wish was different

Intern in the spring if it works with your schedule to have even more client work opportunities!

Advice

Take notes when you receive answers to work-related questions to improve your ability to work independently and showcase yourself as a quick learner.

Risk Consulting Intern

June - August 2021 • Boston, MA

What I liked

The environment. I was in an intern during covid, so we worked hybrid, but everyone made an effort to get to know the interns. They still cared just as much and made a point to make us all feel comfortable.

What I wish was different

Only thing that could have been better was if more people were going into the office. Some days there was very few of this, but this was not RSM's fault.

Advice

Ask lots of questions and be curious, it will lead to more opportunities for growth and knowledge.

Audit Intern

June - August 2021 • Edison, NJ

What I liked

I really enjoyed all of the different talks that we, the interns, were given during the orientation period of the internship and the in depth overview of some of the tasks that we possibly would be doing. The talks allowed us to learn more about the company and what RSM stands for. We learned about RSM's service to the community and how it helped out during the pandemic, we learned about what RSM did for its employees, and it was a great to hear about all of it. I also appreciated the introduction to company systems during orientation as it took a lot of stress away from when we actually began to work.

What I wish was different

I wish I was able to do more work during my time there, however, the summer is not a very busy time so that was understandable.

Advice

I would take full advantage of this experience and really get to know the other employees and partners within your office or general area. Everyone that I spoke with had been more than happy to speak to me about the company and it allowed me to see what RSM and its company culture is really about. Because of my interaction with others, my already good experience was taken to another level and my internship experience remains as the highlight of my summer.

What I liked

I thought their audit internship was fantastic. Applying accounting in the real world vs. textbook was refreshing and an awesome learning experience.

What I wish was different

I do not have any gripes. I thought the internship was excellent.

Advice

Try to do internships in-person. It was extremely beneficial. Working alongside co-workers in person was 1000x easier than asking constant questions online.

What I liked

I loved how much I learned in such a short amount of time. I also loved my co workers. Everyone made me feel very welcomed.

What I wish was different

Just because of the nature of the business the summer is not a very busy season, so I wish I could have been busier.

Financial Advisor Intern

June 2023 • Minneapolis, MN

What I liked

I loved the work environment I was in. Being able to feed off of each other and collaborate to work on large projects in a efficient manner was a game changer. The events throughout the summer were great and I was on a great team that allowed me to excel and grow at RSM.

What I wish was different

I believe that the company has a vast amount of opportunities to offer and I was not knowledgeable about the opportunities without reaching out to the employees of RSM. More opportunities to learn more about what the company has to offer would be great.

Advice

You belong even if you don’t feel qualified!
