State Farm

Technology Intern

June - August 2019 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

State Farm has an amazing corporate culture. The location is great, the workspace is great, everyone that works at State Farm is great. Lots of neat opportunities (like the internal hackathon or intern CTF).

What I wish was different

I wish that I had been integrated into an existing team like the rest of the interns, instead of being on a team consisting solely of interns. To be fair, this was a-typical. Most interns were placed on existing teams.

Advice

I would tell people to apply early since State Farm begins considering candidates early on.

Claims Adjuster Intern

June - August 2019 • Tempe, AZ

What I liked

The culture and experience at State Farm was incredible. They warmly welcome interns to a rigorous training followed by actual work experience. Towards the end of my claims internship, I was handling and settling real claims. The company even flew us to corporate in Bloomington, Illinois for a weekend to meet the corporate executives. I am returning this next summer because it was such a great experience.

What I wish was different

I wish training had been condensed more. A tip I would give is to allow interns to train using their online classes before showing up on day one. This would save valuable time.

Advice

Don't take any moment for granted.

billing assistant

September 2017 - July 2019 • Cedar Rapids, IA

What I liked

My favorite part of the job was meeting all of the clients and new customers. Being able to assist anyone in a time when they need it most is a wonderful feeling.

What I wish was different

I wish there was more opportunities for me when I was there, like being able to attend conferences and meetings that had to do with the business.

Advice

Try it. Everyone should try handling bills at least once in their life to understand from one point of view and be able to see all the different perspectives and circumstances that costumers have to endure in the insurance industry.

Value and appreciate every little bit of experience you get, even if it has nothing to do with your college major; the skills or information you learn will help you in the long run. Every experience counts.

New Business Development

September - October 2019 • Sacramento, CA

What I liked

Nothing

What I wish was different

Actually get involved in anything different

Advice

Horrible place for internship. I was expecting to learn stuff there, that's what internships are for. This internship involved only cold calling businesses for insurance quotes. Sometimes would ride along with agent to give them a quote on business but that's it. 99% of the internship was ONLY making tons of calls to businesses a day, just to get them to agree to a quote and that's it. Come in the morning, immediately start making calls, and continue until end of shift. Never got to work with the manager nor any agent to learn anything at all. This is not an internship, this only a position for the employer to get free labor for more clients and that's it!
