Institutional Financial Services Intern

June - August 2018 • Dallas, TX

What I liked

This internship was a fantastic opportunity to learn about retirement and financial services from a company that cares about its employees and plan participants. I was able to get involved in several projects, shadow and connect with several employees in all kinds of positions within the company. At the end, I also felt like I was able to make a difference and help the company provide vital services to its customers.

Advice

Take every single opportunity to work on different projects and meet different people. I learned this summer about so many ways to be involved in the financial services industry that I had not been aware of previously.

Software Engineer

June - August 2018 • Iselin, NJ

What I liked

I enjoyed how the software development process was handled and I also really enjoyed the people that I worked with. Everyone was very kind and were always willing to help and give advice.

What I wish was different

I wish I would have been placed on a team from the beginning because I spent about 3 weeks waiting for them to place me on a project.

Advice

Do not be afraid to voice your opinion even if you are an intern. Interns come into projects wish fresh eyes and a fresh perspective. Ask a lot of questions and show genuine interest. Be as vocal as possible about anything and everything.

Data Lead Intern

June - August 2018 • Denver, CO

What I liked

Lots of networking opportunities, applying what I learned in school to my work, shadowing different departments, learning about the company, and learning about myself while growing as a professional.

What I wish was different

I wish I could have collaborated with other interns on a project.

Advice

Take advantage of your time being there. Employers want people who are energetic and excited about the job.

Strategic Sourcing

June - August 2018 • Charlotte, NC

What I liked

I loved the work culture they had there. I was able to fit right in with the different teams of professionals I had the opportunity to work with on various projects. All of the projects I worked on were extremely hands on and relevant to courses that I took in the business school, which was great. My managers were involved with each project I worked on and provided guidance and teaching when I needed it.

What I wish was different

This is something that is uncontrollable of course, but since the internship was over the summer, there were a few times that enough people were out of the office on vacation that it got a little slow at work and there was not much to do.

Advice

I would make sure to talk to and get to know as many of your co-workers while you are there, and continue to stay in touch with them even after you are done with the internship. Also make sure to learn as much as you can from them about their jobs and what they do on a daily basis to broaden your career interests, you might even find out you like another type of job in that department and want to pursue that.
