Job Summary:

 

This recruitment will be used to fill two full-time, 9-month, Medical Aide: Medical Assistant positions for Student Health Services at Oregon State University (OSU ).

 

The mission of Student Health Services (SHS ) is to provide leadership for the health of the University community. The Medical Assistant position supports this mission through teamwork, collaboration, participation in organizational committees, University outreach, and by contributing to the academic success of OSU students.

 

The Medical Assistant provides support to clinicians in an outpatient setting at Student Health Services. This role requires a flexible team member skilled in various clinical and administrative tasks, working alongside clinicians and nursing staff to deliver high-quality health services to the University community.

Key Responsibilities

 

90% CLINICAL SUPPORT

 

• Accurately measure and document vital signs in the electronic medical record (EMR ).

• Prepare patients for visits by collecting and documenting patient history, symptoms, vitals, and other pertinent visit details.

• Provide telehealth support to extend clinician services.

• Deliver after-rooming reports to clinicians, including chief complaints and pertinent details.

• Administer vaccines, medications, nebulizers, and other treatments as ordered.

• Perform and demonstrate competency in point-of-care testing and electrocardiograms.

• Serve as a medical chaperone during sensitive exams and procedures, ensuring patient comfort, safety, and dignity.

• Assist clinicians during procedures by preparing the room, positioning and draping patients, providing equipment, and offering emotional support.

• Clean and prepare rooms post-procedure; sterilize or prepare instruments for sterilization.

• Monitor patients in waiting areas for urgent symptoms and escalate care as needed.

• Escort or transport patients to appropriate treatment areas as needed.

• Deliver specimens to the lab.

• Coordinate with nurses to provide support as needed.

• Crosstrain in all clinic areas to function independently.

• Periodically assume additional responsibilities as delegated by the Clinical Services Director, MA Manager, or clinicians.

• Coordinate communication between providers, clinical staff, and patients.

• Ensure timely processing and forwarding of patient care information.

• Answer incoming phone calls, respond to non-medical inquiries, and place follow-up calls as needed.

• Use electronic communication tools for regular internal and external correspondence.

• Maintain confidentiality and ensure HIPAA and FERPA compliance.

• Monitor the EMR to keep clinician and team schedules accurate and up to date throughout the day.

• Take inventory and requisition supplies through the unit supervisor.

• Restock and maintain cleanliness of work areas.

• Upload documents to the EMR .

• Send faxes as needed.

• Participate in department meetings and stay current on policies and procedures.

• Maintain CPR Certification.

• Participate in Student Health Services and Oregon State University staff development activities.

• Evaluate own professional development and the effectiveness of care.

• Improve the quality of care through continuing education.

• Attend CME or seminars recommended by the supervisor.

• Share information obtained at workshops with peers.

 

What You Will Need

 

• Valid CPR certification

• Commitment to promoting an inclusive work environment.

 

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per University Standard: 05-010 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule

 

• Health Care Environment

• This position is deemed “essential” and may be required to report to work during emergency university closures or work curtailments.

• The person in this position will occasionally be required to assist in patient transfers.

• Occasionally need to lift supplies weighing up to 50 lbs.

• This is a 9-month position. The incumbent may be asked to work varied shifts, weekends and some summer hours.

• Exposure to communicable diseases on a daily basis.
