The school nurse comforts children with health problems that interfere with their ability to take part in the everyday school activities. The major focus of the school nursing services is the prevention of illness and disability, and the early detection and correction of health problems. The school nurse promotes student, staff and community awareness of and participation in healthy behaviors.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Assessing and evaluating the health and development of students.
Interpreting the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers,
administrators, and other professionals concerned with the student.
Designing and implementing a health maintenance plan for individual students,
incorporating plans directed by a physician.
Referring students and their parents or guardians to appropriate community
resources for necessary services.
School nurse facilitates positive student responses to normal development;
promote health and safety; intervene with actual and potential health problems;
Address potential health problems that are barriers to learning or symptoms of
underlying medical conditions by coordinating and assisting with mandated
screenings, i.e., vision, and hearing.
Participates as a member of IDEA and 504 teams to meet health needs of
students.
Assures that school district policies and procedures adhere to legal and
regulatory statutes and ethical standards of nursing practice.
Makes independent and timely nursing decisions to triage emergency situations
regarding the school community. Will notify the principal of potential exclusions
and other health related problems.
Deal tactfully with others and exercise good judgment in appraising situations
Collaborates with the client, the family, school staff and others in the conduct of
school nursing practice.
I Maintains up-to-date cumulative health records on all students.
Considers factors related to safety, effectiveness, cost and impact on practice on
the planning and delivery of school nursing services.
Make referrals to appropriate public agencies regarding concerns affecting a
child’s health in school.
Work as closely as possible, within the guidelines of the school health program,
with all school staff to provide a better community understanding between all
school personnel and the community of the school’s role in improving the health
of the community.
Knowledge of lockdown procedures, fire drills, emergency backpacks to insure a
safe school environment.
Participates in registration screening for incoming students.
Monitors communicable disease concerns, including student compliance with
State Immunization laws.
Reviews all field trip forms for updated immunization and medical issues.

QUALIFICATIONS
Current Registered Nurse License
Current New Hampshire School Nurse Certificate
