Intern (Electrical Engineer)
This position may be considered for full-time employment.
Pay Rates vary:
$21.40/hour for Freshmen and Sophomores
$28.53/hour for Juniors, Seniors, Recent Graduates (within the last 12 months) and returning City of Dothan interns.
This is an INTERNSHIP position. ALL applicants must be registered full time students and/or post graduate student within the last twelve months to apply.
The Internship Program is designed to be mutually beneficial for the student and the City of Dothan, and while the City considers this program a part of the overall workforce planning system, there can be NO guarantee of full-time employment at the end of the internship. Funding for this program will be determined annually.
The student internship position is a twelve (12) week assignment designed to enrich students through employment opportunities with the City of Dothan.
The intern will complete assigned tasks including, but not limited to, providing program or project support which may include the collection and analysis of data, creation and formal presentations of drafts, reports, proposals, charts, testing results and other engineering related documentation. The intern will operate under close supervision of a designated supervisor. (It is important to note that the primary work emphasis will be different from one department to another.)
Major Duties
- Drafts of Electric Department work orders ensuring compliance with National Electrical Safety Code.
- Updates GIS map with electric system changes or upgrades.
- Performs field surveys of the electrical system.
- Develops specifications for electrical equipment and materials.
- Reviews development plans.
- Completes work orders for new residential electric services.
- Enters work order data in work order system.
- Assists SCADA Engineer with management of SCADA system.
- Assists with management of used oil and PCB program.
- Performs calculations for pole loading.
- Develops Electrical Line Specifications.
- Assists AMI administrator with operation of AMI system.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
- Knowledge of principles and practices of electrical engineering.
- Knowledge of an electrical distribution systems is preferred.
- Skill in reading and comprehension of laws, rules, and regulations related to the operation of an electrical utility distribution system.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Assistant Director - Electrical Operations or designee will assign work in terms of division goals and objectives. The supervisor will review and provide feedback on completed tasks.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines are city codes and regulations, the employee handbook, APPA Safety Manual, the Code of Ethics, National Electrical Safety Code (NESC), MUTCD guidelines, ALDOT specifications, FEMA guidelines, US Army Corps of Engineers guidelines, and department and city policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK
- The work consists of varied tasks related to the engineering, operation, and management of an electrical distribution system.
- The purpose of this position is to gain exposure to the engineering and operations of an electric utility.
CONTACTS
- Contacts are typically Dothan Utilities engineering staff, line crews, and management staff.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT
- The work will require the operation of standard engineering design tools in the office and field.
- The work is typically performed in an office and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
None.
Minimum Qualifications
- Graduation from a standard senior-high school or GED equivalent, as recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) or Council on Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), and
- Completed a minimum of twenty-four (24) credit hours, by the end of Spring 2026 semester, in pursuit of a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited* college or university; and
- A 2.5 (on a 4.0 scale) or better GPA on all completed coursework (provide the last grade report OR copy of transcript); and
- Prior work experience, community involvement, or participation in extra-curricular activities.
*Accredited through an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education (CHEA).
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Possession of a valid operator driver's license and an acceptable driving record. (PBA 09/10/01)
- An applicant for this position is subject to various background investigations up to and including criminal, credit, past employment, and reference checks.
- Employees are required to submit to Drug and Alcohol testing in accordance with the City of Dothan policy which includes pre-employment and random tests for the duration of employment in this position. (PBA 08/13/12).
- Must meet the City of Dothan's employment physical standards which includes drug/alcohol testing.
