English Teacher
The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
We are seeking an English Teacher. The Teacher demonstrates an understanding of the curriculum, subject content, and the developmental needs of students by providing relevant learning experiences.
Applicant must be able to:
- Effectively addresses relevant curriculum standards.
- Integrates key content elements and facilitates students’ use of higher level thinking skills in instruction.
- Demonstrate ability to link present content with past and future learning experiences, other subject areas, and real-world experiences and applications.
- Demonstrate an accurate, current, and specific knowledge of the subject matter and a working knowledge of relevant technology.
- Demonstrate pedagogical skills relevant to the subject area(s) taught and best practices based on current research.
- Bases instruction on goals that reflect high expectations for all students commensurate with their developmental levels.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the intellectual, social, emotional, and physical development of the age group, as well as the cultural context.
- Demonstrate an understanding of appropriate accommodations for diverse learners and students learning in unique contexts (e.g., English learners, gifted learners, students with special needs, etc.).
- Use content-specific language, correct vocabulary and grammar, and acceptable forms of communication as they relate to a specific discipline and/or grade level.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in English.
- Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching Certificate/License with an endorsement(s) in English.
- Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment to successfully perform the work.
- Ability to supervise students and youth, facilitate appropriate classroom management, and maintain accurate records.
- Experience as an English teacher in a secondary setting.
Additional Considerations
- Master’s Degree preferred.
- Experience teaching at-risk youth preferred.
- Knowledge of DJJ and DHRM policies and procedures and the ability to meet DHRM established physical demands.
