General Description
The Department of Mathematics and Statistics has a limited number of Graduate Teaching Assistant (GTA) available. These awards are made on a case-by-case basis, and are contingent upon applicants’ academic credentials and departmental need. The program is based on the idea that graduate students, when given the opportunity to assist the faculty, staff, and administration, not only provide a service to the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, but also gain valuable experience through this work.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
Primary responsibilities are to assist the faculty member or supervisor with implementing the instructional program and to achieve the goals of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. Responsibilities will vary, but typically include any, all, or more than the following:
1. Grade homework, projects, quizzes and exams and maintain records of grades under the supervision of course instructor/course coordinator.
2. Run recitation sections, lead discussion groups face to face and/or online, hold office hours as necessary.
3. Proctor in-class quizzes and exams. However, proctoring should not conflict with graduate assistants’ own classes and examinations.
4. Provide support for lecture setup and demonstrations.
5. Assist with exhibitions, undergraduate events, conferences and other academic activities organized by the department.
6. Attend all meetings requested by the Department/supervisor in timely manner.
7. Any other duties that come under Department/University need and requested by the Department
Essential Functions
Successful applicants must be punctual and otherwise dependable.
Qualifications
The Department will consider graduate students from any discipline, but successful applicants must demonstrate knowledge of the course subjects with which they will assist.
- Must be an APSU student enrolled at least ½ time.
- Direct deposit of pay is required.
- A background check may be required of the successful applicant.
Working Outside of the Department
Graduate assistants may not accept additional employment at the University without special permission from the Dean of the College of Graduate Studies.
