Title: Student Leadership Programs Coordinator (Summer Internship)
Position Summary
The Student Leadership Program Coordinator serves as the on-site lead for our Summer Leadership Programs for high school students.
This role runs from June 8-July 31 and is responsible for facilitating daily programming, mentoring students, coordinating nonprofit service partners, and ensuring a high-quality leadership experience.
The Coordinator acts as the primary point person during program hours and helps create an engaging, organized, and mission-driven environment. Ideal for students interested in nonprofit leadership, education, public policy, social impact, or youth development.
Position Type: Full-time, On-Site (40 hours/week, not Remote)
Pay Type: Stipend or Eligible for Service Hours/Academic Credit
Transportation: Need own transportation to sites (All sites are located in Durham, NC)
Reports To: Executive Director & Community Programs Manager
Supervision: Program Volunteers
Key Competencies/Experience
- Enthusiastic, energetic, and affirming engagement style
- Strong organizational and planning skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, email, and social media
- Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities
- High attention to detail and follow-through
- Experience working with high school students preferred
- Ability to supervise and collaborate with volunteers
Responsibility Overview:
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
- Secure and coordinate nonprofit service site partnerships
- Conduct outreach to schools and community partners to recruit participants
- Assist in developing and finalizing curriculum
- Communicate with students and parents regarding forms, logistics, and payments
- Coordinate and support onsite volunteers
- Facilitate daily programming and serve as on-site leader
- Capture photos and videos for social media and community engagement
Summer Schedule
Program days are Monday-Friday, 9:00am-4:00pm. Additional planning hours may occur outside of camp hours as needed.
On-Site Training: June 8-12
IMPACT Camp (Leadership/Service Camp): For rising 9th-12th graders
Dates (4 separate weeks): June 15-19, June 22-26, June 29-July 3, July 13-17
Students visit a different nonprofit each day to learn about community needs providing area high school-aged youth with an affordable, local week community service/urban mission experience. They will hear from community leaders and engage in reflection activities. Participants will also receive leadership and team-building training, and learn about housing, hunger, poverty, caring for the environment, and other issues facing the local community.
Civic Engagement Leadership Institute (CELI): For 10th-12th graders
Dates: July 20-24
CELI is an intensive summer enrichment experience that empowers high school students to impact Triangle communities through socially conscious thought and action and is a deep dive into understanding the root causes of community needs. Students hear from community leaders and get practical leadership skills culminating with a Capstone Project presented to community judges (think Shark Tank). Students will develop a combination of knowledge, skills, values, and motivation to help shape the future of the Triangle and beyond.
Model United Nations: For 10th-12th graders
Date: July 27-31
Model UN is a week-long session that grows student leadership and diplomatic debate skills, builds confidence in public speaking, and immerses students in real-world contemporary global issues – creating more engaged students. Students will learn how Model United Nations can be used as a vehicle for learning about the world around us, civic engagement, and personal growth. It will be facilitated with assistance from UNC-Chapel Hill.
