Shelter Veterinarian
Jackson County seeks licensed Veterinarians for our Animal Shelter located on Spring Arbor Road in Jackson, Michigan.
We have a variety of staffing options available to fit your professional schedule. Serve full-time as the lead Veterinarian or provide services on a flexible, contractual, part-time or relief basis.
We strive to provide exceptional care to the animals and public we serve and are offering flexible schedules ranging from 8 up to 40 hours per week to do so!
SERVICES TO BE PROVIDED:
The primary responsibility of the veterinary staff is to provide medical and humane care and treatment to all animals in our care regardless of diagnosis, prognosis or length of time housed in the Shelter. Services will include evaluate, diagnose, treat, and follow progress of animals while utilizing professional protocol within the operating means of the Shelter. Services to be provided include but are not limited to:
1. Perform spay/neuter surgeries on animals adopted from the animal shelter
2. Advise shelter staff on animal health issues including pre and post-surgical care, wound/injury care, disease control and containment
3. Provide other needed Veterinary medical care, as feasible, with existing equipment and medical facilities
4. Provide supervision of staff on issues impacting animal welfare
5. As necessary, accompany Animal Control Officers and other law enforcement officers to locations of suspected, conditions of inadequate care, neglect or cruelty and conduct an examination of the animals and/or assist in the investigation of the same. Upon request or order from the court, may be required to turn over records, other information or testify regarding such cases.
6. Performs or assists with euthanasia
QUALIFICATIONS & SKILLS REQUIRED:
- Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree (DVM)
- Licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Michigan
- Maintain Michigan Controlled Substance License
- Experience with the practice of veterinary medicine, public health or environmental health preferred
- Must also demonstrate superior medical judgment combined with a high level of empathy
SALARY COMMENSURATE WITH EXPERIENCE; BENEFITS EFFECTIVE DATE OF HIRE Benefits shown below are for full time hours. Part time employees (less than 30 hours per week) have a reduced level of benefits.
This is an exempt level position offering excellent benefits with full time employment including health, life, disability, paid time off and holidays, effective date of hire!

Benefit eligible employees opting out of the County's Health Plan with proof of other coverage qualify for a $3,000 Cash-In-Lieu of Insurance benefit paid bi-weekly at the rate of $125.
