Lead Instructor: ENGINEERING/ARCHITECTURE APPRENTICESHIP 

Midtown Achievement Center for Boys seeks an outstanding student or professional to serve as Lead Apprenticeship Instructor for our Engineering / Architecture Apprenticeship from Tuesday, June 16, 2026 – Friday, July 24, 2026.

 

THE ORGANIZATION 

Midtown Center for Boys is actively seeking an exceptional student or professional to serve as a Lead Instructor for our Engineering/Architecture Apprenticeship program, running from Tuesday, June 16, 2026 – Friday, July 24, 2026. THE AIMS OF MIDTOWN’S ENGINEERING APPRENTICESHIP

This Apprenticeship engages 12–15 rising 9th–12th grade students in a rigorous and hands-on introduction to engineering, architecture, and the built environment.

The program includes:

  • Interactive classroom instruction
  • Collaborative, project-based design challenges
  • Hands-on team engineering/build experiences
  • Guest lectures from industry professionals
  • Field trips to firms, job sites, and significant architectural/engineering landmarks

Beyond technical instruction, the Apprenticeship emphasizes professional formation and workplace readiness, including:

  • Punctuality and timeliness

     
  • Accountability and responsibility

     
  • Professional self-presentation (dress, grooming, body language)

     
  • Clear communication and public speaking

     
  • Initiative and creative problem-solving

     
  • Perseverance and resilience

     
  • Openness to constructive feedback

     

The goal is not only to develop technical competency, but to strengthen work ethic, discipline, and study habits necessary for success in high school, college, and future careers.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS 

The Lead Instructor plays a central role in shaping the student experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Designing and submitting a detailed course curriculum by Monday, June 8, 2026, emphasizing:
    • Student-directed learning
    • Reflection and critical thinking
    • Practical, real-world projects

       
  • Teaching daily classes and leading hands-on projects

     
  • Evaluating students on both technical skills and professional development

     
  • Collaborating with Midtown staff to:
    • Secure guest speakers
    • Plan meaningful field experiences

       
  • Modeling professionalism and leadership for students

The instructor should cultivate an environment that promotes creativity, discipline, collaboration, and excellence.

QUALIFICATIONS 

● Declared major in Engineering, Architecture, or a closely related field

  • Strong academic and behavioral standing
  • Meaningful coursework and practical experience in the discipline
  • Passion for mentoring and teaching high school students
  • Commitment to working with students from urban backgrounds
  • Professional experience in the field is strongly encouraged. 

LOGISTICS 

  • Staff Orientation: Tuesday, June 9 – Friday, June 12, 2026

 

  • Program Dates: Tuesday, June 16 – Friday, July 24, 2026

 

  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM

 

  • Location: 1510 N Claremont Ave., Chicago, IL 60622

 

  • In-person instruction required
