Dental Assistant Observer

Position: Dental Assistant Observer 

Department: Clinical Operations 

Reports to: Clinical Supervisor by Dentist, Administrative Supervisor by Practice Administrator/ Office Manager 

Status: Non-Exempt  

Salary: Unpaid Shadowing – Learning Experience 

Dental Shadowing / Observation – Dental Students 

 
Job Summary: 
An observational experience allowing prospective or early‑stage dental students to gain insight into the daily operations of a dental practice without performing clinical duties. 

Primary Responsibilities 

Observe dentist and dental team interactions with patients 

Learn about clinical workflow, patient communication, and office operations 

Understand professional expectations within a dental setting 

Maintain strict patient confidentiality at all times 

Follow all safety and infection control policies while on site 

Program Expectations & Requirements 

Interest in dentistry or enrollment in a pre‑dental/dental program 

Signed confidentiality and observation agreements 

Observation only – no hands‑on clinical responsibilities

Required Background Check 

Successful completion of a background check may be required.  

Work Environment 

Clinical dental office setting with exposure to dental instruments and disinfectants. Supportive environment with a seasoned team to continue development of skills. 

Lifting Requirements 

Ability to lift up to 25 lbs occasionally. 

Mobility Requirements 

Standing for extended periods, bending, etc.; moving throughout clinic areas. 

Indiana Requirements 

Must comply with ISDH infection control rules; may not perform radiography unless holding Indiana certification. 

Kentucky Requirements 

Must comply with Kentucky Board of Dentistry regulations; Shadowing cannot perform expanded duties requiring certification.
