In the coaching role, this person instructs athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success. Spiritual Leadership
• Have periodic devotionals and prayer with the team.
• Motivate students to accept God’s gift of salvation, and be a Christian witness and role model to them in order to help them grow in their faith.
• Lead students to a realization of their self-worth in Christ.
• Ensure that the classroom environment and the athletics department work environment are Christian-based, nurturing, wholesome, and loving.
• Work with the administration and staff to address the spiritual formation needs of the students.
• Carry out Christ-centered counseling with students and staff.
Academic Leadership
• Have a thorough knowledge and understanding of the Christian philosophy of education that will help in providing leadership and guidance in the school’s development of and commitment to a Christian worldview.
• Have knowledge of the school’s curriculum, standards, and mission.
• Integrate biblical principles and the Christian worldview throughout the curriculum and sports activities.
• Teach classes as assigned following the prescribed scope and sequence as scheduled by the administration.
• Have knowledge of the physical/emotional development of children—particularly at the age level of the children being taught—and understand the problems they face.
• Plan broadly through the use of semester and quarterly plans and objectives, and more currently through the use of a lesson plan book.
• Plan an athletics program and a program of study that as much as possible meet the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, thus challenging them to do their best work.
• Employ a variety of instructional aids, methods, and materials that will provide for creative teaching to reach the whole child—spiritual, mental, physical, social, and emotional.
• Plan through approved channels the use of field trips, guest speakers, and other media for a balanced classroom.
• Use homework effectively for drill, review, enrichment, or project work.
• Regularly assess the learning of students, and provide progress reports as required.
• Keep open communications. Send information and correspondence to players/parents and students/parents. Respond in a timely manner to parent complaints and to parent requests for help or information.
• Ensure that her or his school classroom, gym, and outdoor facilities reflect a professional and Christian environment.
• Ensure that coaching responsibilities do not hinder classroom teaching responsibilities.
• Participate, when requested, in formal and informal parent-teacher or parent-coach conferences.

School Leadership
• Have the ability to accomplish the goals and objectives assigned by the school administration and school policy.

• Provide a good learning environment by keeping proper discipline in the classroom, the gym, and other places on the school premises.
• Meet regularly with the rest of the staff to ensure coordination of programs and prompt problem resolution.
• Provide input as needed for the school master calendar.
• Maintain a physical presence with the students by attending and, when possible, participating in school chapels, assemblies, athletics events, and other presentations.
• Arrange for substitute teachers when needed, and assist them in successfully carrying out their responsibilities.
• Participate in beginning-of-year staff orientation, staff devotionals, staff meetings, and parent/teacher fellowship meetings.
• Respect professional ethics that require confidentiality concerning the sharing of information about children, parents, or staff.
• Maintain regular and accurate records of attendance and grades to meet the demands for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.
• Keep students, parents, and the administration adequately informed of student progress or deficiencies, and give sufficient notice of student failure.
• Know the procedures for dealing with emergency situations in the classroom, gym, and outdoor facilities. Conduct required emergency safety drills in coordination with school leadership.
• Report to the appropriate individuals any campus safety, health, and maintenance needs that are observed.
• Inform the administration in a timely manner if unable to fulfill any assigned duty.
• Deal directly and frankly with the school administration in an earnest effort to resolve differences of opinion when they exist.
Coaching Leadership
• Work with the athletic director in setting specific, attainable goals and objectives for the coached sport.
• (For those who teach physical education classes) Coordinate, along with the athletic director, all athletics events that take place within school facilities and grounds such as physical education classes, interscholastic athletics contests, tournaments, trips, clinics, camps, practices, and scrimmages.
• Lead student athletes on and off the court or field in a specific sport, increasing their knowledge of the sport and emphasizing good sportsmanship.
• Work with head coach to establish and supervise team tryout selection procedures and to develop team rosters.
• Participate in monthly or periodic staff meetings of coaches.
• Develop a program for teaching and promoting the ideals and fundamentals of good sportsmanship, supporting the school’s mission statement.
• Enforce consequences for students and volunteers who do not abide by established standards.
• Support participants, coaches, parents, and fans that teach and display good sportsmanship. Recognize exemplary behavior and actively discourage undesirable conduct by athletes, coaches, parents, fans, and others.
• Be familiar with the school policies and the policies of appropriate national organizations, the state athletic association, and the league; establish procedures so that the school, its personnel, students, parents, and other spectators won’t be placed in potential liability situations.
• Thoroughly review, along with the AD, all eligibility forms, issues, and questions before athletes are cleared to play in interscholastic contests in the coached sport.
• In consultation with AD, plan programs related to the coached sport and provide input for all related events on the master calendar.
• Review and make recommendations to the AD regarding any changes to the athletics handbook.
• Be able to carry out the emergency response plan for injured players in the specific sport and for potential medical emergencies that may be experienced by any participant or spectator.
• Ensure that appropriately trained personnel and adequate emergency medical supplies and equipment (such as an automatic external defibrillator) are present at sporting events for coached sport.
• Interact with family physicians, parents, and athletics trainers following an injury to an athlete; ensure that the athlete is cleared by a doctor before the athlete returns to the sport.
• Work with the AD to maintain a file of student athlete records, such as physical exam forms, eligibility forms, permission slips, rosters, athletics awards, and statistical records.
• Compile records of both team and individual marks in the specific sport that will serve as school records.
• Regularly inspect athletics facilities, including locker rooms, fields, and gyms used by specific sport, to make sure there is no cause for injury through negligence and neglect, and report any maintenance issue to the facilities coordinator or custodian.
• Enforce procedures for safety and parental notification for away events.
• Use the school newsletter, press releases, and any other appropriate means to publicize the accomplishments and awards of individual students and teams.
• Report the results of all athletics home events to the appropriate media.
• Represent the school, as needed, at the league coaches’ meetings, other league events and meetings, and state athletic association meetings.
• Communicate the details for team photos to assistant coaches, parents, and students.
• Notify the AD regarding all letters and sports awards needed for individuals and teams.
• Contact officials associations whenever games are cancelled or rescheduled.
• Check to see that all contest and practice venues have been scheduled in advance. Make sure gyms, fields, and spectator areas are properly set up before visiting teams arrive.
• As directed, coordinate and prepare the budget for coached sport, and present it to the athletic director for inclusion in the general budget.
• As directed by the athletic director, supervise the spending of athletics monies according to budget plan and revenue availability.
• As directed by the AD, secure bids for the purchase of equipment for the specific sport when rule changes necessitate it or when old equipment is worn out.
• Participate in the inventorying of all equipment and uniforms for coached sport. Provide for care and security of all sports equipment.
• Account for all uniforms and equipment checked out. Notify the athletic director or head coach if players have uniforms or equipment that is missing or damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
