Position Summary Reporting directly to the CFO, the Senior Accounting Specialist provides critical mid-to-senior level accounting support across the company’s multi-location operations. This role handles advanced transactional accounting, complex reconciliations, full-cycle accounts payable/receivable management, inventory and cost accounting support, month-end close leadership tasks, and process improvements to ensure accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and efficient operations. The position offers significant responsibility and serves as a key pipeline for career advancement into senior accounting, supervisory, or specialized finance roles within a growing metals distribution and processing organization.
Key Responsibilities · Lead and perform day-to-day transactional accounting activities across multiple entities/locations, ensuring strict compliance with company policies, GAAP, and internal controls. · Maintain and review accurate accounting records, analyzing source documentation for completeness, accuracy, proper approvals, and cost allocation (including inventory-related transactions). · Manage full accounts receivable cycle: customer invoicing, billing accuracy, aging analysis, collections strategy/support, credit application review, and bad debt reserve monitoring. · Oversee full accounts payable cycle: invoice processing/coding/verification (matching to POs/receiving docs), vendor payments, 1099 preparation, vendor record maintenance, and payment optimization. · Perform and supervise intermediate-to-complex balance sheet reconciliations (including bank, inventory, fixed assets, accruals, and intercompany), identify/resolve discrepancies, and drive timely resolution. · Lead or significantly contribute to month-end close processes: journal entries, accruals, variance analysis, financial data preparation, checklists, and reporting support. · Maintain comprehensive electronic documentation and audit trails to support internal/external audits, reviews, and regulatory compliance. · Lead special projects, develop and document process improvements, conduct data analysis for financial reporting/forecasting. · Handle advanced functional responsibilities (as designated by department needs), which may include inventory costing/support, fixed asset capitalization/depreciation, treasury/cash flow analysis, corporate card/expense policy enforcement, compliance filings, intercompany reconciliations, or cost center analysis. · Collaborate closely with the accounting team, operations, and other departments to optimize workflows in a multi-location, inventory-intensive environment.
Qualifications · Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or related field (preferred); Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (advanced functions, pivot tables, data analysis); experience with ERP/accounting systems (e.g., inventory modules) and invoice workflow tools strongly preferred. · Prior experience in distribution, manufacturing, metals/steel industry, or multi-location environments highly desirable (inventory accounting, cost management a plus). · Solid understanding of GAAP, accounting principles, transactional workflows, inventory costing, and internal controls. · Excellent attention to detail, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and proven ability to manage multiple priorities/deadlines in a fast-paced setting. · Superior written and verbal communication skills; ability to work independently, take initiative, and collaborate effectively as part of a team. · Proactive mindset with high integrity, eagerness to lead improvements, and adaptability to evolving needs.
