When you join the United States Coast Guard, you don’t just start a job — you begin a journey that combines hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world experience.
What You’ll Do
ITs are responsible for computer and voice networks. You'll be a system administrators for unclassified and classified sytems, and manage hardware, firmware, and software to keep units' IT resources online. Aboard a cutter, you'll use your skills to support tactical command, control, and communications systems. ITs are also assigned to electronics support units, providing critical support to computer systems at various units to keep them mission capable.

Becoming an IT
When you join the Coast Guard, you'll start with Basic Military Training to learn the fundamentals of the Coast Guard and military life.
Most graduates will then begin a short apprenticeship at their first unit that introduces them to Coast Guard life and explore career paths. After a short period, you'll add your name to the specialty school list for IT. After completing this “A-school,” you’ll report to a new unit as an IT.
In some cases, based on your experiences and current service needs, guaranteed specialty school can be included in your enlistment contract and you’ll skip the apprenticeship.

All Coast Guard jobs are subject to military eligibility requirements. These include:
- Fitness and Body Composition standards
- Job-specific ASVAB test scores
- Citizenship or lawful permanent resident (green card) status
- Background and credit checks
- IT requires normal color vision
