When you join the United States Coast Guard, you don’t just start a job — you begin a journey that combines hands-on training, mentorship, and real-world experience.
What You’ll Do
GMs are responsible for firearms and weapons systems, ammunition and pyrotechnics. You'll be trained in mechanical, electronic, and hydraulic systems as well as ammunition and pyrotechnics handling.
GMs use, maintain and train others on Coast Guard small arms and shipboard weapons systems to ensure every unit's readiness to perform law enforcement and defense duties.

Becoming a GM
When you join the Coast Guard, you'll start with Basic Military Training to learn the fundamentals of the Coast Guard and military life.
Most graduates will then begin a short apprenticeship at their first unit that introduces them to Coast Guard life and explore career paths. After a short period, you'll add your name to the specialty school list for GM. After completing this “A-school,” you’ll report to a new unit as a GM.
In some cases, based on your experiences and current service needs, guaranteed specialty school can be included in your enlistment contract and you’ll skip the apprenticeship.

Who We’re Looking For
All Coast Guard jobs are subject to military eligibility requirements. These include:
- Fitness and Body Composition standards
- Job-specific ASVAB test scores
- Citizenship or lawful permanent resident (green card) status
- Background and credit checks
- GM requires normal color vision
