Position Overview
The Greenhouse Manager will oversee all operations of the STEM Grown greenhouse initiative, including educational programming, sustainable agriculture practices, and revenue generation through product sales. This position requires a dynamic individual who can balance educational mission with business sustainability while securing future funding through grant development.
Position Details
- Position Type: Full-time, grant-funded
- Duration: Two years of secured funding; position continuation is dependent upon successful grant acquisition
- Location: On-site at greenhouse facility
Key Responsibilities
- Design and implement educational programs that integrate STEM learning with hands-on agricultural experiences
- Manage all greenhouse operations including planting, cultivation, harvesting, and maintenance of crops with focus on microgreens and urban farming techniques
- Develop and execute business strategies to bring greenhouse products to market, ensuring financial sustainability
- Collaborate with the grants team to identify funding opportunities, write grant proposals, and submit applications to ensure continued program funding
- Maintain greenhouse environmental controls, irrigation systems, and equipment to ensure optimal growing conditions
- Oversee outdoor garden beds, rainwater collection systems, and apiary operations for pollinator education
- Build partnerships with local schools, community organizations, and potential customers for product distribution
- Track program metrics, maintain financial records, and prepare reports for stakeholders and funders
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Urban Agriculture, Botany, Biology, or related field
- Demonstrated knowledge of sustainable agriculture and greenhouse management practices
- Experience developing and delivering educational programming
- Strong written and verbal communication skills for grant writing and stakeholder engagement
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with attention to detail
- Entrepreneurial mindset with business development and marketing capabilities
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microgreens production and cultivation
- Background in urban farming or community agriculture initiatives
- Proven track record of successful grant writing and fundraising
- Knowledge of farmers' markets, CSA programs, or direct-to-consumer sales models
- Experience with educational curriculum development aligned with STEM standards
Physical Requirements
- Ability to work in greenhouse environments with varying temperatures and humidity
- Capable of standing for extended periods and performing physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable working outdoors in various weather conditions
