Summer Camp Instructor

We run sewing, fashion design, art, and crochet classes year round out of our East Brunswick location. During the summer, we also offer camps at Brookdale and Mercer colleges.

We primarily need instructors for our camps at Brookdale and Mercer. We’re at Mercer from June 22- July 17, and Brookdale from July 20- August 21. The camps run Mon-Fri, with sessions from 9-12 & 1-4. Kids range in age from 8-14.

Right now, we are short a teacher for the week of August 10 at Brookdale. We would want to have you work as a helper at the camps for at least 1 week prior to get the idea of how it works, and to work alongside me (the owner) at our EB camp too. The dates for those are somewhat flexible, but the week of Aug 10 is a must.

During the camps, teachers will teach kids how to draw a fashion figure and how to sketch clothing. Each week has a theme that kids are encouraged to use as inspiration.

Teachers also teach the kids how to sew on a sewing machine. Kids make drawstring bags, pin cushions, and eventually a piece of clothing that is based on one of their drawings. We aren’t looking for perfection- we encourage kids to embrace their vision and creativity. We have patterns for basic pants and tops for kids to work with alongside teacher guidance.

Teachers must be able to do all of the above, along with knowing how to operate and maintain a sewing machine. This includes threading upper thread and bobbin, filling bobbins, and changing needles as needed. The machines are newer Singer and Brother models. The teacher should be able to instruct kids on types of fabrics as needed, and will also need to keep me up to date if more materials are needed.
