Registered Nurse Supervisor I (County Jail)

The Chautauqua County Department of Health is currently accepting applications for the full-time position of Registered Nurse Supervisor I to work within the Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville, NY. This critical role involves supervising and delivering high-quality nursing care within a secure correctional facility, in accordance with established policies and procedures from both the County Health Department and the Sheriff’s Office.

The Registered Nurse Supervisor I is responsible for overseeing daily nursing operations, ensuring compliance with medical protocols, and managing the performance of licensed nursing staff. This is a unique and rewarding opportunity for a dedicated RN with strong leadership and clinical skills who is committed to making a difference in a public health and correctional setting.

Key Responsibilities:

• Deliver direct nursing care to inmates in the County Jail
• Supervise, evaluate, and support nursing staff and daily healthcare operations
• Review and ensure compliance with all M.D. orders, medication records, and treatment documentation
• Administer medications according to Nurse Practitioner or Medical Doctor instructions
• Conduct health assessments and gather medical histories for inmates
• Respond to medical treatment requests, perform triage, and coordinate appropriate care
• Manage inventory, security, and ordering of medications and medical supplies
• Maintain accurate medical records and transcribe physician orders
• Ensure infection control standards are met and maintained
• Assist physicians during medical exams and treatments
• Conduct monthly staff meetings and participate in training and in-service programs
• Maintain and update jail clinic policies and procedures
• Enter and retrieve data in electronic medical records systems
• Coordinate services with outside healthcare providers as necessary

Qualifications:

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State
• Previous experience in a supervisory or leadership role in a healthcare setting preferred
• Strong clinical judgment and ability to work independently within a correctional environment
• Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills
• Experience in public health or correctional healthcare is a plus
• Proficient in the use of medical software and electronic health records systems

Additional Information:

• This position is being filled on a provisional basis, pending the results of a future Civil Service Examination.

Minimum Qualifications:

Possession of a Bachelor's degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited or New York State registered four-year college or university.

Special Requirements:

1. Possession of a license issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse at the time of application, appointment and during service in this classification.

2. Ability to meet the regular transportation requirements in carrying out field work assignments at time of appointment and during service in this classification.

NOTE: Candidates who possess credentials from other states for which New York maintains reciprocity will be approved conditionally pending proof of New York State Certification.
