Position Overview

The Chautauqua County Department of Health is currently accepting applications for Registered Professional Nurse II (County Jail) positions to provide professional nursing care to inmates at the Chautauqua County Jail in Mayville, NY.

This position involves comprehensive nursing assessment, diagnosis, and care within the guidelines of accepted professional practice. Nursing duties are diversified and performed under the supervision of a Registered Nurse Supervisor and a Physician. The primary function of this role is to ensure safe, timely, and appropriate medical care for incarcerated individuals.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide professional nursing care to inmates in the County Jail
• Conduct inmate health assessments, including health history collection and general physical examinations
• Respond to medical requests, triage patients, provide treatment, or refer to the Jail Physician or other healthcare providers as appropriate
• Manage inmate medications, including ordering, inventory control, storage, security, and return of medications and medical supplies
• Dispense and administer prescribed medications in accordance with Nurse Practitioner instructions or Physician standing orders
• Transcribe physician orders into inmate medical charts and maintain accurate medical records
• Ensure proper use of medical supplies and equipment
• Participate in conferences, in-service training, and orientation of new staff
• Maintain required nursing documentation and records
• Counsel correction officers as needed to ensure proper delivery of inmate medications and treatments
• Assist the Jail Physician as required
• Coordinate inmate healthcare services with other disciplines
• Provide shift reports to oncoming staff

Minimum Qualifications

• Possession of a New York State Registered Professional Nurse license at the time of application, appointment, and throughout employment

Please Note:

• Candidates licensed in other states with New York State reciprocity may be conditionally approved pending proof of NYS licensure
• In accordance with NYSED Law Section 6905 (effective June 2019), Registered Nurses must obtain a baccalaureate degree or higher in nursing within ten (10) years of initial licensure

Employment Status

This position is being filled on a provisional basis, pending the outcome of a future-dated Civil Service examination for this title.
