Dermatologic Surgery Clinical Assistant Gap Year Job Description
A dermatologic surgery medical assistant serves both clinical and administrative functions to support the practice and serve the patient population. Patients are often referred to the surgical team with biopsy-proven skin cancers (basal cells, squamous cells, and melanoma) requiring further treatment. The chief responsibility of an individual in this role is to ensure the delivery of patient services under the direction of the care team. A medical assistant is expected to serve and gain experience in the following capacities:
- Managing patient care by:
- Preparing patients for sterile dermatologic procedures in the outpatient setting by obtaining informed consent and medical history, administering local anesthetic agent, assisting surgeon peri-operatively, and bandaging patient
- Assisting our surgeon throughout the pre- and post-operative period (facilitating surgical consultations, biopsies, follow-up visits, and performing suture removals)
- Conducting and counseling patients on evidence-based treatment regimens and post-procedure care
- Managing flow of clinical patients and drafting visit notes
- Executing administrative tasks such as:
- Receiving phone calls and digital communications for scheduling and patient inquiries
- Processing and initiating referrals from and to internal and external providers
- Maintaining weekly stock of equipment
- Scanning paperwork into the electronic medical record
- Assisting practice of general dermatologists by completing check in and check out registration for patients on non-clinical days
- Physician mentoring, with the goal of gaining admission to medical and physician associate programs, is available to clinical assistants.

- Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and able to prioritize multiple clinical tasks to best serve the interests of the practice and patients.
- Strong adherence to protocol and standard safety measures.
- Must be able to handle blood and needles as the assistant will be assisting in procedures.
Currently we are seeking applicants for two-year gap positions starting May 26, 2026 through June 30, 2028. We are also open to candidates who can start prior to then. We will provide all relevant training necessary to succeed in this position.
This is a full-time, 40 hour+ per week position.
