Americorps VISTA Missouri State Public Defender Holistic Defense Services

The Missouri State Public Defender’s Holistic Defense Services Program has teamed up with AmeriCorps to pioneer a groundbreaking holistic approach to public defense. This approach tackles the root causes of our clients’ involvement in the criminal legal system and helps to break the cycle of criminalization.

As a VISTA, you will join the fight for justice by: 

  • Developing an understanding of public defense and the challenges afflicting MSPD clients. 
  • Building up the Holistic Defense Services unit to increase service offerings and enhance best practices. 
  • Maintaining and building upon existing program partnerships, resources, guides, and manuals. 
  • Developing a framework for maintaining and expanding grant funding, training initiatives, and volunteer networks related to the holistic representation of MSPD clients. 
  • Managing various capacity building projects tailored to your skills and interests.

 

Required Minimum Education & Experience: 

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university is preferred. Degrees in social work, criminology, psychology, sociology, or closely related field will be favored.

 

AmeriCorps Stipulations:

Candidates must be willing to commit to one year of full-time (32 hours/week) service. As part of the 2026-2027 AmeriCorps program, these positions will span from Summer 2026-Summer 2027, with some flexibility on the start date. 

 

Living Stipend/Benefits: 

VISTAs will receive a living allowance of $24,893.96 for the full year's service, paid in bi-weekly increments. Upon completion of service, VISTAs will have a choice between an end-of-service stipend ($1,800) or an AmeriCorps Education Award ($7,395). 

Health coverage is also available for members who are not otherwise covered by a health care policy. All members are eligible for student loan deferment and interest forbearance.
