About Restorative Therapies 

Restorative Therapies’ develops advanced Functional Electrical Stimulation technology used in neurorehabilitation for clinical and home use. The company’s systems are designed to support therapy for individuals with neurological impairments, weakness, and/or paralysis. 

 

About the Role 

Restorative Therapies is looking for a Mechanical Engineering Intern to support our Research and Development team. This internship is ideal for a student who is interested in medical device design and wants hands-on experience contributing to real engineering projects in a product development environment. 

 

The Mechanical Engineering Intern will assist with design, prototyping, documentation, testing, and product improvement activities. This role is best suited for someone who enjoys solving practical design problems, uses CAD software consistently, and wants to better understand how mechanical design decisions affect usability, manufacturability, reliability, and end-user experience. 

 

Responsibilities 

The Mechanical Engineering Intern may assist with: 

 

Creating, updating, and maintaining CAD models, assemblies, drawings, and related engineering files. 

Supporting prototype development, part evaluation, and design iteration. 

Assisting with mechanical testing, product evaluation, and documentation of results. 

Reviewing components, materials, tolerances, fit, form, and function. 

Supporting design improvements related to usability, durability, manufacturability, and serviceability. 

Helping troubleshoot design, assembly, or product performance issues. 

Assisting with engineering documentation, design changes, and technical records. 

Participating in project discussions with engineering, production, quality, clinical, and service teams. 

Organizing technical files, drawings, design notes, and project documentation. 

Contributing to brainstorming and problem-solving for new and existing medical device designs. 

Qualifications 

Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering with a mechanical focus, or a closely related engineering field. 

Must be at least a rising junior. 

Strong interest in medical device design and product development. 

Working knowledge of CAD software and consistent hands-on use of CAD for modeling, assemblies, and drawings. 

Comfortable reading and creating technical drawings. 

Basic understanding of mechanical design principles, materials, tolerances, and manufacturing processes. 

Strong attention to detail and ability to document work clearly. 

Strong problem-solving skills and willingness to learn. 

Ability to work independently while also collaborating with engineers and cross-functional team members. 

Interest in human-centered design, rehabilitation technology, assistive technology, or electromechanical systems is a plus. 

Preferred Experience 

Experience with SolidWorks, Onshape, Creo, Inventor, Fusion 360, or similar CAD software. 

Prior project, lab, co-op, internship, capstone, robotics, machining, 3D printing, or prototyping experience. 

Exposure to biomechanics, rehabilitation technology, medical devices, or assistive technology. 

Familiarity with testing methods, design controls, documentation practices, or regulated product development is helpful, but not required. 

 

What You’ll Gain 

This internship provides practical experience in medical device design and research and development. The intern will gain exposure to mechanical design, prototyping, testing, documentation, and the cross-functional process of developing and improving products used in rehabilitation settings.
