Environmental DNA Laboratory Technician (Kits)

Environmental DNA (eDNA) is DNA sloughed from organisms into the surrounding environment (such as skin cells from fish into a stream). eDNA is a powerful conservation tool for defining the distribution of endangered, rare, and invasive species. We are seeking a laboratory technician to aid in sterilization and building of eDNA sampling kits used for projects related to aquatic wildlife conservation. 

Responsibilities include:

1.)   Sterilization of materials used for eDNA sampling and lab materials used for DNA extraction,

2.)   Assembling eDNA sampling kits,

3.)   Sending out eDNA sampling kits and water pumps to collaborators,

4.)   Maintaining inventory of supplies and maintaining a clean work area,

(5)   Data entry,

(6).   Process and store kits controls,  eDNA, and tissue samples. 

In addition, the technician must have attention to detail, take detailed notes, be organized, and work independently. This lab position will not involve fieldwork. The position provides valuable experience in laboratory procedures/equipment and rigorous scientific methodology. There is potential to expand the responsibilities if exceptional performance is shown. This position is sponsored by The National Genomics Center for Wildlife and Fish Conservation (NGC) at the US Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Station. Work will occur at Rocky Mountain Research Station building at the south end of campus. Scheduling is flexible, but all training must occur during USFS building hours: 9am-5:00pm, Mon-Fri. Starting wage is $17 - $18/hr.

 

Qualifications:

Applicants are preferred to have completed Cellular and Molecular Biology or related course work. Competitive applicants will be individuals who are responsible, punctual, and able to communicate and work well with others. Attention to detail is a must. Experience in laboratory settings is strongly preferred.

Hours per Week: 15-40 hours a week (summer) 12-29 (fall, spring semester)

Wage/​Salary/​Other Compensation:  $17 - $18/hr.

Position start date and length: Applicants should be able to start ASAP and be available to work at least through August 2026. Fall/spring position is also available.
