Program Overview

The Wisconsin Association of Free & Charitable Clinics (WAFCC) AmeriCorps Program partners with healthcare organizations across Wisconsin to increase access to care for uninsured and underinsured populations. Through service, AmeriCorps VISTA members help organizations build sustainable systems, strengthen community partnerships, improve operations, and expand resources that support long-term impact.

Madison Street Medicine (MSM) provides compassionate healthcare services to individuals experiencing homelessness and others facing barriers to healthcare access. By serving with MSM, you will help strengthen the organization's capacity to provide high-quality healthcare and connect vulnerable community members with the resources they need to improve their health and stability.

About the Opportunity

Are you passionate about health equity, community impact, and creating sustainable solutions to complex challenges?

As a Community Development, Communications & Resource Advancement VISTA, you will play a critical role in helping Madison Street Medicine expand its reach, strengthen organizational systems, and increase resources that support healthcare services for individuals experiencing homelessness.

This position is ideal for someone interested in nonprofit leadership, healthcare administration, communications, fundraising, community engagement, and organizational development.

Rather than providing direct services, the VISTA member will focus on building infrastructure, creating sustainable systems, and developing tools that continue benefiting the organization long after the service year concludes.

What You'll Accomplish

Advance Healthcare Quality & Organizational Excellence

  • Support Madison Street Medicine's pursuit and maintenance of WAFCC Gold Standards of Excellence.
  • Assess organizational systems and identify opportunities for improvement.
  • Develop policies, procedures, and best practices that strengthen service delivery.
  • Create documentation and implementation guides for future staff and VISTA members.
  • Collaborate with leadership to improve organizational effectiveness and sustainability.

Strengthen Communications & Community Engagement

  • Evaluate and enhance internal and external communication strategies.
  • Help maintain and improve website content and digital communications.
  • Expand Madison Street Medicine's social media presence and community outreach efforts.
  • Develop communication tools, templates, and engagement materials.
  • Increase awareness of healthcare services available to underserved populations.
  • Build sustainable communication systems that can be maintained long-term.

Expand Fundraising & Resource Development

  • Research grant opportunities and funding sources.
  • Assist with grant writing and resource development initiatives.
  • Collaborate with fundraising teams and community partners.
  • Help develop annual fundraising plans and event schedules.
  • Research innovative strategies to engage younger donors and supporters.
  • Create sustainable fundraising processes and documentation for future use.
