Job Title: Art Teacher - Elementary

Location: Netherwood Elementary School & Violet Avenue Elementary School
Employment Type: Full-Time, tenure track

Position Summary:

The Hyde Park Central School District seeks a dynamic and creative Elementary Art Teacher to serve students in grades K–5 across two elementary schools. This shared position will provide comprehensive visual arts instruction that fosters creativity, critical thinking, and an appreciation for artistic expression. The teacher will plan and deliver developmentally appropriate art lessons aligned with the New York State Learning Standards, ensuring equity and engagement across both school communities. Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver visual arts instruction to K–5 students in two elementary schools.
  • Develop and implement standards-based lessons in alignment with the NYS Learning Standards for the Arts.
  • Collaborate with other educators to integrate art into interdisciplinary projects.
  • Use a variety of media, techniques, and tools to introduce students to both two- and three-dimensional art forms.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that encourages student creativity, expression, and collaboration.
  • Assess student work using formative and summative measures aligned with district and state guidelines.
  • Maintain effective communication and collaboration with both schools’ principals, faculty, and support staff.
  • Coordinate and display student artwork in each building and participate in district or school-wide art events or exhibitions.
  • Integrate literacy, SEL, history, culture, and interdisciplinary connections into the visual arts curriculum.
  • Maintain inventory and manage art supplies efficiently between two school sites.
  • Participate in professional development and district-wide curriculum initiatives.
  • Adhere to all district, state, and federal policies.
     

Qualifications:

  • Valid New York State Certification in Visual Arts (K–12).
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education or related field; Master’s Degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of child development and age-appropriate art instruction.
  • Experience teaching visual arts at the elementary level preferred.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills to coordinate instruction and materials across two schools.
  • Ability to foster a culturally responsive classroom that celebrates diverse backgrounds and perspectives.
  • Demonstrated experience in, or a strong commitment to, Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB), emphasizing student-centered, choice-based art instruction.
  • Seeking educators who view the art room as a creative studio where students develop artistic independence, engage in meaningful inquiry, explore diverse artistic perspectives, and create work that reflects their identities, interests, and experiences.

Work Environment:

  • Position involves regular travel between two elementary school buildings (travel mileage may be reimbursed according to district policy).
  • May require lifting/moving of art materials and equipment.
