About DOWNTOWN

DOWNTOWN is a nationally distributed luxury lifestyle magazine covering culture, travel, dining, design, entertainment, fashion, business, real estate, and luxury living across New York City, Miami, Los Angeles, and beyond. Through our print publication, digital platform, and social media channels, we deliver engaging editorial content that inspires and informs our readers.

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly organized, detail-oriented Associate Managing Editor to support day-to-day editorial operations across our print, digital, and social platforms. This role is ideal for someone with a strong editorial background who is ready to take on greater leadership responsibilities while working closely with senior leadership, editors, contributors, and interns.

This freelance position requires an in-office presence three days per week (Monday through Thursday), from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with a consistent weekly schedule established in advance. Maintaining a regular schedule is essential so the editorial team and interns know when they are expected to be in the office and have reliable leadership and support throughout the week.

Equally important, we are looking for someone who brings a positive, collaborative, and creative energy to the team. The ideal candidate is approachable, supportive, and enjoys working in a fast-paced editorial environment. This position offers the opportunity to develop leadership, editing, and project management skills while helping produce a nationally distributed luxury lifestyle publication.

Responsibilities

  • Support the day-to-day management of editorial operations across print, digital, and social platforms.
  • Help oversee and coordinate the internship program by supervising interns, assigning projects, providing mentorship, and maintaining a consistent in-office schedule.
  • Edit, proofread, fact-check, and prepare editorial content for publication.
  • Write and edit original editorial content for both print and digital platforms, including features, news, and timely online stories.
  • Maintain a consistent editorial voice and ensure content aligns with the magazine's quality standards.
  • Collaborate with writers and editors on story development, pitches, revisions, and long-form features.
  • Manage editorial calendars, assignments, and production timelines to ensure deadlines are met.
  • Upload, review, and publish content using WordPress while maintaining formatting consistency and accuracy.
  • Organize and manage editorial assets using Dropbox.
  • Provide constructive editorial feedback that supports growth and stronger storytelling.
  • Collaborate with digital, social media, and creative teams to maximize content visibility and engagement.
  • Ensure content follows journalistic ethics and established editorial standards, including AP Style and The Chicago Manual of Style.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree (completed or in progress) in Journalism, English, Communications, Publishing, Media Studies, or a related field preferred.
  • Internship, student publication, or professional experience in editorial publishing, journalism, communications, or media.
  • Excellent editing, proofreading, and copyediting skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to mentor interns and collaborate effectively across departments.
  • Experience using WordPress for content management is preferred.
  • Familiarity with Dropbox, Google Docs, and Microsoft Word.
