Staff Accountant

Position Overview

The Staff Accountant will provide accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and tax preparation services for multiple clients. This position requires strong attention to detail, the ability to manage multiple deadlines, and the ability to communicate effectively with both clients and team members.

Essential Responsibilities

Client Accounting & Bookkeeping

  • Maintain accurate accounting records for multiple clients.
  • Perform monthly bank and credit card reconciliations.
  • Record and review accounts payable, accounts receivable, deposits, expenses, and other accounting transactions.
  • Prepare and post month-end adjusting and closing entries.
  • Review general ledger accounts and identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Assist with bookkeeping cleanup and account reconciliations as needed.
  • Communicate with clients regarding accounting questions, missing information, and outstanding items.

Payroll & Payroll Tax

  • Process payroll for multiple clients, including reviewing payroll information for accuracy.
  • Prepare and/or coordinate federal and state payroll tax deposits.
  • Prepare quarterly and annual payroll tax filings, including Forms 941, W-2, W-3, and applicable state filings.
  • Assist with payroll-related notices and correspondence from taxing authorities.
  • Maintain accurate payroll records and ensure payroll deadlines are met.

Tax Preparation

  • Prepare individual, business, and other applicable tax returns.
  • Assist with preparation of federal and state income tax returns.
  • Gather, organize, and review tax information and supporting documentation.
  • Research tax questions and assist with resolving tax issues.
  • Assist with tax notices, correspondence, and responses to taxing authorities.
  • Review completed tax returns for accuracy and completeness.

Client Service & Administrative Responsibilities

  • Maintain organized and accurate client files and workpapers.
  • Follow established firm procedures and internal controls.
  • Communicate professionally with clients regarding deadlines, information requests, and accounting or tax matters.
  • Manage multiple client engagements and prioritize work based on deadlines.
  • Assist other team members with accounting, payroll, tax, and special projects as needed.
  • Maintain confidentiality of client financial and tax information.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred.
  • Previous accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, or tax preparation experience preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of basic accounting principles.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Office preferred.
  • Tax preparation software experience is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work independently while also working effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to manage multiple clients and meet firm and client deadlines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

The successful candidate will be expected to take ownership of assigned client accounts, maintain accurate and timely work, communicate proactively regarding issues or missing information, and develop a strong understanding of each client's accounting and tax needs.
