The Maryland General Assembly's Legislative Intern Program offers college and university students a distinctive opportunity to work in legislative offices during the annual session. Interns gain firsthand experience with the legislative process, supporting legislators and staff through a range of substantive tasks.

The role

You'll be embedded in a legislative office during session, contributing to real work — not coffee runs. Interns attend committee hearings, track legislation, and interact with constituents, lobbyists, and fellow legislators. The session is fast-moving, and you'll need to keep up.

What you'll do

- Research legislation and draft summaries for legislators - Attend committee hearings and floor sessions; take notes and report back - Respond to constituent inquiries by phone and in writing - Assist with correspondence, scheduling, and office coordination - Monitor bill status and compile tracking reports - Help prepare legislators for hearings, briefings, and floor debates

About you

- Currently enrolled in a college or university degree program - Strong research and writing skills — you can explain complex topics clearly - Comfortable in a busy, high-volume office environment - Interest in Maryland state government, public policy, or law - Reliable, detail-oriented, and able to manage competing priorities

Nice to have

- Prior coursework or experience in political science, public policy, law, or a related field - Familiarity with the Maryland legislative process - Experience with public speaking or constituent engagement
