Research assistant - remote or hybrid

Overall Description:
·        Assist physician who is an associate professor at University of Massachusetts Medical School.
·        Shared responsibilities with at least one other research assistant.
 
 
Start Date
·        Looking for someone to start June or July 2023 to continue for 1-2 years
 
 
Perk:
·        Guaranteed to earn authorship on at least 1 publication; the last two assistants were each first author on 1 paper and co-author on 2 papers.
 
·        You will be involved in multiple projects affording you the opportunity to author multiple papers.
 
 Research themes:

·        Anticoagulation - Most of the projects will revolve around the use of blood thinning medicine (known as anticoagulation) for the prevention of stroke and other clotting disorders.
 
·        Epidemiology and health services-based research-including enrollment and collection of data prospectively as well as leveraging existing data to examine health outcomes
SPECIFIC


 Health disparities - Example - filming exemplar African-American storytellers (through Zoom) discussing their success with starting or resuming blood thinning medicine (i.e., anticoagulation) to prevent stroke. After filming, we will distribute these videos to African-Americans not currently taking anticoagulation with hope that these untreated patients become absorbed into the stories of the exemplar patients and begin to contemplate taking anticoagulation 


Health informatics
  • alerting providers about patients who are eligible but not currently receiving anticoagulation
  • sending messages to patients through the hospital’s health portal; the messages will encourage patients to discuss using anticoagulation;
  • digital crumbs looking what providers and patients do electronically after receiving an alert or message we sent
  • engagement/fidelity-do providers/patients review our materials/open our messages?
 
Ideal candidate:
·        Someone who will have completed bachelor's degree by June 2023 although exceptions could be made for person with sufficient availability throughout the day
·        Others, however, should also apply as most of the work can be done remotely and the amount of on-campus time will be limited.
·         Looking for 30-40 hours per week with ideal person being someone who is flexible to work at different times during the day but make use of downtime for exam preparation or preparation of applications for medical/graduate school.
 
Compensation:
·        $25.00 / hour but potentially more depending on experience.
·        Travel to the medical campus will be compensated separately.
 
Hours:
·        Mostly business day
·        Some evening and weekend hours will be required although there is flexibility as to exactly which days and what timings. Most of these evening and weekend hours will be spent assisting the supervising physician with recruitment or interview of study participants by telephone. Usually only 2-3 hours maximum for any weekend day.
