College Admissions Consultant/Mentor

By day, Admissionado is an admissions consulting company founded by two Brown University grads (one ended up going to Harvard Business School, the other to USC Film School). By night, we save cats from trees and foil rebel plots. Fifty percent of these statements is 100% true.

We are scouring the earth for wildly intelligent, self-motivated, fiercely talented mentors. Not just any editor. The Michael Phelps of diagnosing weaknesses in a profile. The Serena Williams of identifying cool, sometimes hidden opportunities for differentiation. The Muhammad Ali of... overall awesomeness. This gig goes way beyond knowing a good SAT score or high GPA is for a top school. Admissionado mentors work one-on- one with clients, providing high-level concierge guidance throughout the application process. They also work with students as young as 9th grade to help set them on the path to success. Guidance for the seniors ranges from helping students finesse their list of target schools to pushing the student to brainstorm (cooler) essay topics, to helping with post-application support for transitioning into the undergraduate world, and everything in between. For the younger kiddos, mentors will be helping with summer planning, extracurricular building, leadership training, knitting (ok maybe not this), and anything else that they need to build a strong profile for when they apply to college.

Admissionado mentorship is serious business. We take responsibility and reliability very seriously. If you can’t commit to lightning fast email responses, regular check-ins with students (and often their parents) to fray anxiety, and lean into real leadership, this isn’t your kind of place. Brains is half of it. Reliability is the other half. With so much at stake for our clients, our team takes our work very seriously.

This position is challenging and flexible... and fun!—(ya heard right). Our consultants are independent contractors (1099 employees) so they manage their own schedules and workloads, and work from home (in pajamas, if so desired). Your expected workload will depend on how many clients you choose to take on – some of our consultants can’t get enough clients while others prefer to stick with 1-3 students while they juggle their full time gigs.

Most of our team members stick around for years and we’ve had consultants who have been with us since the start. The ideal fit would be for a consultant /mentor who plans to do this work with us long term.

Rate: Consultants will receive flat rates for each package, which is equivalent to $60 an hour and is the starting rate for all new hires.
Availability: You’ll need to respond to emails within 24 hours (since parents, students, and people in general may get rather antsy). That goes for weekends as well as
weekdays. While we do have clients who work with us throughout the year (Freshman- Juniors), the bulk of college applicants work with us around May through mid-January, so if you tend to take giant tech-free hiatuses during holidays or vacations during those months, this may not be the best gig for you. This is a part-time gig for most of our consultants (who all have day jobs), but they work around their clients, not the other way around. Ideally, we want someone who can commit 5-20 hours a week, if you want to commit more, you are welcome to!
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree from an elite college/university. Unfortunately, there’s no way around the fact that our clients tend to prefer people who have graduated from the top 20 schools. We do NOT accept current students
  • Experience helping others with their college applications or mentoring, whether in a formal or informal capacity
  • Knowledge of today’s college climate and what it takes to get accepted into the most competitive of schools
  • Ability to self-manage
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Like, really strong attention to detail
  • Strict adherence to deadlines
  • Exceptional, Oprah-level interpersonal communication skills
  • Comfortable engaging with parents (of mentees)
  • Easygoing (but also confidence-inspiring) personality
  • Reliability Score of 1,000,000%
  • Willingness to work with students as young as 9th grade
  • Lots of patience – (after all, these students are in high school)
  • Ability to turn off the ego (parents and students ask questions, so the ability to
  • explain your thought-process comes in handy!)
  • Please send inquiries, resumes, AND cover letters to Rose Ngo (rose@admissionado.com).
  • **please do not message on LinkedIn** - these messages will go unanswered.
