Summer Intern reporter

Maine’s Ellsworth American, an award-winning 11,000-circulation weekly newspaper in Downeast Maine, seeks two paid full-time summer interns to write feature stories and take photos for three of the newspaper’s 60-page monthly entertainment guide and feature publication called "Out & About." The internship runs from late May until mid-August or later, with flexibility for individual schedules.
Amid the continuing COVID-19 pandemic, many of our company’s staff are working remotely from home. Consequently in our newsroom, the few editorial staff members are distanced and wear masks to protect themselves and others.
For the internship, the American is looking for aspiring journalists who have a sense of adventure and are physically active outdoors. The job requires high energy, organizational skills and excellent writing and interviewing skills. Photography skills are also sought. The interns work 40 hours a week on a flexible schedule, meaning that they work the occasional Saturday or Sunday. Interns must have their own car, and camera. This is a feature-writing position — not hard news. Interns report, write and illustrate at least several feature story packages in the course of a week.
Ellsworth American interns have been new college graduates, graduate students and undergraduates. Interns always find the summer experience to be extremely helpful, as the editorial staff takes its teaching role seriously.
The Ellsworth American just concluded its 150th year of publication. It is printed in broadsheet format on the paper's own web press, which also prints several other area papers. The newspaper's offices and printing plant are in downtown Ellsworth, population 6,000, the county seat of Hancock County. Bar Harbor and Blue Hill are 20 minutes away, and Bangor is a half-hour away. Hancock County is an extremely popular tourist destination, and tourism accounts for most summer jobs. Year-round employment includes construction trades, fishing and farming. The county also has an unusually active arts community whose hectic summertime schedule includes gallery shows, concerts and plays.
