Science Writer

SUMMARY: Woodwell Climate Research Center (Woodwell) is a leading independent climate research institute, with a mission to advance science-based climate policies through scientific research and outreach. The keys to Woodwell’s success are the quality of its research and the ability to deliver that science to policymakers and decision makers.

The Science Writer works with other members of the Communications team to explain Woodwell’s work and its significance in the context of global efforts to control climate change. They must be adept at synthesizing and understanding research results; interviewing and collaborating with scientists; and weaving technical scientific concepts into compelling, well-written narratives. The Science Writer produces two to three articles per week, addressing a range of audiences, including partners, donors, policymakers, and the general public. Ideally, readers will be able to answer the question, “Why should I care about the climate and the work these scientists are doing?” The successful candidate will synthesize multiple points of view into a well-constructed and well-written story. Strong collaboration skills will be essential in this role. 

·      Produce two to three articles per week, a mix of quick research updates, profiles, and in-depth feature stories.

·      Collaborate with climate scientists to brainstorm and develop story concepts.

·      Write engaging, interesting and concise copy which is scientifically accurate.

·      Develop appropriate graphic and multimedia elements to support written stories.

·      Post stories on Woodwell’s website and promote through SEO and social media.

·      Participate and contribute to the planning of communications campaigns across various platforms.

·      Ability to travel as well as work flexible hours when needed.

·      Bachelor’s degree in environmental science, geography, ecology, communications, or related field. Masters preferred.

·      4+ years scientific writing experience and demonstrated ability to write engagingly and effectively, translating complex scientific materials into clear, engaging narratives for a variety of audiences. 

·      Familiar with best practices in climate science communication.

·      Highly organized, attention to detail, results-oriented.

·      Exceptional written, oral, and presentation skills.

·      Strong editing skills.

·      Knowledge of electronic media platforms such as websites, newsletters, social media, etc.

·      Proficiency in Microsoft Office computer programs.

·      Ability to creatively find solutions to challenges.

·      Ability to anticipate, manage, and resolve conflicts.

·      Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

·      Team player with leadership skills, abilities and desire to interact with people at all levels.

Classification and Compensation: This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position. Woodwell offers a generous benefits package.
