This position is responsible for shaping and executing marketing strategies focused on recruitment, retention, and reactivation of hunters, anglers, campers, boaters, trappers, and all outdoor enthusiasts while helping to align agency and other nationwide educational programming services.

  • Part of the Big Picture – This is a leadership position that will align and implement department-wide, statewide, and nationwide recruitment, retention, and reactivation content marketing and communications strategies, special project assignments from other states, federal and local partners, public relations needs, and oversight of the implementation and evaluation of all marketing campaign efforts.
Who We're Looking For?
We are seeking a creative and motivated team member to coordinate and develop relevant, engaging, effective outreach content and customer engagement strategies that drive nationwide sales for outdoor recreation in South Dakota. This involves reaching diverse audiences, removing barriers to participation for outdoor recreationists, and developing recruitment, retention, and reactivation strategies through an omnichannel approach for hunters, anglers, shooting sports participants, trappers, and outdoor recreationists.
The right candidate will be enthusiastic, organized, and task-oriented. Upon hiring, this person will be able to advise and execute effective email marketing strategies, develop content for promotional efforts and marketing campaigns, create presentations and gather data/information (for Commission meetings, legislative session, Governor's Office requests, etc.), write messages, reports, outlines, and other documents that tie back to the marketing and communications plan objectives, provide assistance to the communications team and state park managers on the state parks sign manual, provide assistance to the communications manager on press releases, speech writing, talking points, press conferences, and media training as needed, assist in the planning and researching phases to develop and execute marketing strategies while working closely with the marketing director and communications manager.
This individual must possess the ability to collaboratively develop creative solutions to address long-standing challenges in the marketing sector. The candidate must have impeccable computer skills: the ability to perform basic data analysis, Microsoft teams, Microsoft suite, Outlook, and familiarity with Tableau, Power BI, ESRI, Access, and Excel data tables.
Additionally, the ideal candidate will have the expertise and/or experience in quantitative and qualitative market analysis. This individual must excel in identifying key market statistics, interpreting findings, and helping senior-level management understand the numbers behind marketing strategies. This team member will have a Bachelor's degree in marketing, business administration, communications, public relations, or a similar field with 2-5 years of similar professional experience.
This individual will work from the Pierre, SD, office. This is a salaried position. However, regular working hours are Monday-Friday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with some evening and weekend work and travel required.
Qualified candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills, be self-motivated and punctual, deploy high-quality organizational skills, and are passionate about serving the public while carrying out the Game, Fish, and Park's mission.
What You Will Do:

More specifically, you will perform these duties:
  • Turn data and analysis into easily understood verbal and written communication tools from fact sheets and detailed reports to user profile reports, testimony, and policy statements.
  • Work with Parks and Wildlife team members responsible for educational program development and communications staff to evaluate recruitment, retention, and reactivation strategies.
  • Serve as a central point of contact for Parks education (or statewide parks naturalists) working with the R3 and Relevancy Manager.
  • Work with leadership and regional staff to track marketing and communications goals and objectives.
  • Analyze marketing data to determine overall department level and programming-specific efficiency and effectiveness. Communicate project results and recommendations to the marketing director and leadership staff.
  • Conduct research to quantify and identify trends in industry-related markets and ensure forward movement.
  • Create and maintain research databases and related reports.
  • Respond to research inquiries.
  • Forecast and strategize with the communications team regarding user trends.
  • Work with the communications team to develop relevant and engaging content and deliver effective outreach and customer engagement strategies through an omnichannel approach.
  • Create engaging and welcoming web content while assisting with routine updates: monthly Commission Audio and Documents, enhancements to parks and wildlife pages that align with messaging and marketing tactics, management of statewide events calendar, post weekly press releases to the website and State News.
  • Responsible for managing and publishing Instagram content daily with an elevated approach to sharing stories while initiating Instagram Takeovers (with staff or influencers) and user-generated content.
  • Creative lead for Parks Division messaging and marketing.
  • Responsible for obtaining content, creating, and distributing the GFP quarterly newsletter.
  • Take point on key initiatives like Go Forth, Go Fish, Track Trails, Employee Recruitment, Parks Prescription Program, Fitness Passport, Annual Parks Theme, BassMasters, Capital Campout, Capital Outdoor University, military appreciation weekend, state fair activity trail.
  • Identify, purchase, and maintain inventory of promotional items, merchandise, and giveaway items for events, e-commerce, and other initiatives.
  • Staff special events and assist with planning and coordination efforts.
  • Attract and retain participation in angling, hunting, trapping, shooting sports, and outdoor recreation; identify target audiences and barriers to participation.
  • Expand capacity within new and current stakeholders for programs that fill gaps in R3 efforts; assist with various programs where applicable.
