Breakthrough Summerbridge Teaching Fellowship (Summer 2023)

The Breakthrough Summerbridge teaching fellow experience is designed for undergraduates of all majors and for those who intend to pursue careers in education, as well as those who haven’t yet considered it. The opportunity is unlike any other available to undergraduates and our alumni are transformed by the experience. Education coursework is not a prerequisite. We seek applicants with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for working with students. Our teaching fellows must be committed to personal growth and comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Because we celebrate the diversity of our community, we seek undergraduate applicants from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

Breakthrough Summerbridge's Teaching Fellowship Program offers unpaid internships that provide intensive training in a classroom setting under the mentorship of experienced professional teachers. As a Teaching Fellow, you will be assigned to an Instructional Coach who will meet with you weekly to provide consistent and constructive feedback. Your Instructional Coach will assist you with lesson planning, as well as general preparation for the summer. They will also observe your class at least once a week.

You will receive ongoing teacher training through onsite workshops. Some of the workshop topics include but are not limited to the following: classroom management, providing feedback, and teaching practices specific to content area. There will also be regular team meetings that will allow you to engage with other Teaching Fellows and Instructional Coaches. Those meetings are essential and will play a key role in helping foster a sense of community during your 8-week Fellowship.

As part of your Teaching Fellowship, you will teach two 50-minute sessions per day in your core academic subject and teach one elective of your choosing. You will have several responsibilities beyond the classroom, including but not limited to: planning events for students, organizing All School Meetings, participating in daily community activities, and participating in three evening events.

During the eight-week residency, Breakthrough Summerbridge teaching fellows receive over 100 hours of teaching and leadership training, and 75 hours of lead classroom experience. Teaching fellows have the opportunity to practice skills that prepare them for the classroom or other professional settings, including:

  • Learn lesson planning, classroom management, instructional strategies, feedback techniques, and other essential learning tools
  • Receive regular coaching from professional educators
  • Lead family conferences and participate in team meetings
  • Teach core academic classes (math, science, writing, literature) and elective classes (e.g., foreign language, dance, art)
  • Collaborate with colleagues in a challenging, fun, and supportive environment
  • Work with a diverse group of highly motivated students, staff, and teachers
  • Learn how to receive and deliver actionable feedback
  • Practice presentation skills
  • Hone time management and project planning
