Communications Associate

The American Battlefield Trust, the nation’s premier historic land preservation nonprofit, seeks a creative and compelling Communications Associate to build awareness of the Trust and its mission within targeted audiences, generating brand recognition and introducing potential funders to our work. Your work will help more Americans appreciate the ongoing resonance of key moments in our nation’s history.

Reports To: Director of Communications
Job Classification: Full-Time; Exempt

Major Duties and Responsibilities
  • Conceptualize and create compelling content -- including articles, press releases, talking points, emails, collateral materials, advertising and other visual media -- designed to showcase the dynamism of American history and introduce new audiences to the Trust’s mission.
  • Advance messaging that defines the Trust brand and builds relationships with partner organizations to help us expand reach and impact
  • Seek out opportunities to engage Trust experts with new entities and audiences – conferences, alliances, networks, speaking opportunities, podcasts, etc.
  • Research and evaluate brand-building opportunities, sponsorships and content marketing
  • Craft outreach to share Trust initiatives with influencers, media and other force multipliers
  • Educate parks and tourism entities about Trust resources available for integration at their sites
  • Collaborate with internal teams to shape and populate marketing and fundraising campaigns  
  • Evaluate efficacy of outreach efforts and refine techniques to maximize impact

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience
  • Keen interest in American history and a flair for good storytelling
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Unwavering attention to detail paired with creativity and an eye for good design
  • Excellent organizational skills and a mindset geared toward problem-solving
  • Strong work ethic with the ability to thrive in both independent and collaborative settings
  • Knowledge and application of evolving trends in brand strategy and storytelling
  • Understanding of nonprofit marketing principles for lead generation, engagement, retention and conversion
  • Demonstrated ability to balance multiple priorities and meet firm deadlines
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite required; experience with Drupal CMS, graphic design and visual storytelling platforms and software highly valued
  • Bachelor’s degree and 2-3 years of hands-on communications and/or marketing experience, with preference for nonprofits or other causes
