Paid Summer College Internship in Intergenerational Field

DOROT is a nonprofit organization based in New York City. Our goal and mission is to alleviate the social isolation felt by older adults by bringing the generations together. DOROT offers an 11-week Summer College Internship for undergraduate students entering their sophomore, junior and senior years of study in the Intergenerational Program Engagement Department. This unique internship experience will find interns working and collaborating together and with DOROT staff and other facilitators on intergenerational programming which they will deliver to cohorts of older adults and teens. A total of 6 interns will be selected for this highly competitive internship opportunity.

At the time of the posting of this internship, each of these positions will operate on a hybrid model, four days per week in the office and one day per week remotely for the first half of the summer. For the second half of the summer, interns will be delivering DOROT programs either onsite at DOROT on the same schedule as the first half of the summer, on a hybrid model at the Riverdale Y or on a hybrid (or remote) model at the Shorefront Y. If there are significant changes to this schedule, interns will be given as much advance notice as possible. All interns must be able to show proof of COVID vaccination.

This internship program provides students with an understanding of the issue and impact of social isolation among older adults as well as DOROT’s response. We give each intern substantive work and project management experience. Each intern will be entrusted with significant responsibilities and will make meaningful contributions to the organization and the seniors DOROT serves. In addition to the day-to-day tasks that are assigned through the Intergenerational Program Engagement Department, each intern will also be matched with one older adult which they will speak with weekly for a one-hour friendly conversation.

Prior to beginning one’s internship, each participant will attend a comprehensive orientation. Throughout the summer, interns will collaborate with the DOROT staff and one another, fostering a great sense of camaraderie.

Program Details
DOROT’s Summer College Internship will begin with orientation on Wed. and Thurs., June 1 and 2. This orientation is mandatory and will run 9am-5pm on both days. The internship will conclude on Fri., Aug. 19. Interns will work Mon. – Thurs. – 9am/9:30am – 5pm/5:30pm (exact times, by week will be determined and shared with interns in advance) and Fri. – 9am-4pm. The DOROT offices will be closed on Mon., June 6 and Mon., July 4. At the successful conclusion of the summer, each intern will receive a stipend in the amount of $4,200.

Application Process
To apply, candidates must send their resumes to Sharon Stahl, Manager of Volunteer Recruitment and Engagement at collegeinternship@dorotusa.org and complete DOROT’s 2022 Summer Internship Application. Acceptances will be awarded on a modified rolling basis until all positions have been filled. Only candidates who submit complete applications and resumes will be considered.
