STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Incumbent will create and maintain a safe, positive learning environment to ensure the holistic development of each student and staff member through cultural, social, spiritual, physical and academic experience. Incumbent will support the Bureau of Indian Education’s mission, which is to provide high quality education opportunities from early childhood through life while considering a tribe’s need for cultural and economic well-being. In performing this mission, the BIE takes into account the spiritual, mental, physical, and cultural aspects of school-aged children within their family and tribal community. To meet its trust responsibility to Indian Tribes, BIE works to strengthen education opportunities for American Indian students to be successful and competitive globally; to enhance student participation in their tribal communities; and support tribes in nation-building, in development of the next generation of tribal leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
The School Social Worker will perform social work as related to the education of students to be served by the school, grades Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. Incumbent will contact parents as needed to promote the physical, social and psychological well-being of students. The school social worker will provide and/or arrange family counseling and other agency support services as the situation requires and as needed to promote student emotional stability. Incumbent will act as a liaison between the school, the student's family and other servicing agencies to promote an understanding of school policies and relationships and how the two can work together to educate the student involved. The school social worker will be responsible for filing SCANS when needed. The school social worker will provide 504 services and be expected to be involved in various school-wide improvement activities and committees.

BASIC EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Pay Level 03: BS*/BA* and State Certification with no experience
Pay Level 04: BS*/BA* and State Certification with 1 year experience
Pay Level 05: MS*/MA* and State Certification with 2 years experience
*Appropriate State Certification in social work, required. Emergency and provisional certificates may be accepted under the condition they are issued by the state certification authority.
Bachelors/Masters Degree will be in social work or related area. The qualifying experience required will have been in the area of social work.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:A valid social work license issued by the State Social Work Examiners Board is a pre-requisite. A valid state issued social work license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal of the position
If the position requires operation of a motor vehicle in performance of work, a valid State Driver's license is a prerequisite. Some positions involve work transporting students or conducting other assigned work throughout the geographic jurisdiction of the school district or locale. A valid State Driver's license must be maintained as a condition of employment; failure to do so may result in removal from the position.
Term - 3 years NTE. You will be offered a term appointment not-to-exceed three (3) years.
NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 contract years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 3). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be converted to school year or year long contract without further competition.
BIE employees occupying Title 25 positions are required to be fully vaccinated against SARS-CoV-2(COVID-19).Accommodations may be possible.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters are required, glasses permitted. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without a hearing aid, is required, except that some positions may be suitable for persons who are blind or deaf. Inmost instances, an amputation of arm, hand leg or foot will not disqualify an applicant for appointment, although it may be necessary that this condition be compensated by use of satisfactory prosthesis. In addition, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. The position requires normal physical activity with the work, field travel, and attendance at meetings and conferences from the duty station.

  • The incumbent is required to drive a motor vehicle to conduct business at field locations. You MUST submit a current GSA Form 3607, Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and Driving Record for full consideration. Incumbent must possess a valid state driver’s license.

If selected, you may be expected to temporarily telework, even if your home is located outside the local commuting area. Once employees are permitted to return to the office, you will be expected to report to the duty station listed on this announcement in accordance with the Department’s reentry procedures provided by your Servicing Human Resources Office. At that time, you may be eligible to request to continue to telework one or more days per pay period depending upon the terms of the Department of the Interior’s telework policy.
