Energy Emissions Data Analyst

Job-Specific Responsibilities : 
This person will be an important part of the air emissions and energy team by assembling and analyzing data to support the university’s climate and environmental compliance goals. Primary responsibilities include collecting, analyzing, and reporting Harvard’s emissions and energy data as well as product ownership of the emissions tracking software working with various stakeholders across Harvard’s Schools and Administrative Units at different levels of the University.
This person will manage Harvard’s emissions and energy data and serve as the Product Owner (PO) for our Salesforce-based emissions tracking software. This software is used to compile, calculate, and report energy and emissions data to internal stakeholders and external reporting bodies. 
Assists the Air Program Manager with maintaining Harvard’s air emissions and energy data management process, including but not limited to the following responsibilities:
  1. Aggregates and conducts quality control for the university wide emissions and energy data in support of federal, state, local, and voluntary reporting requirements.
  2. Performs data analysis as needed for reporting and trend identification and ensures a high level of data accuracy and integrity. 
  3. Creates and implements a roadmap for data quality improvement across Harvard’s emissions reporting program. 
  4. Documents and updates the procedures used to collect and maintain the applicable data and systems.
  5. Analyze and deliver emissions data in support of compliance obligations, voluntary reporting programs, and decision-making by Schools and Administrative Units based on an annual calendar of deliverables and ad-hoc requests. 
  6. This may include integrating with, preparing, and delivering reports in Salesforce, Excel, EPA EnergyStar Portfolio Manager, or other reporting systems required by reporting bodies. 
  7. In collaboration with the Office for Sustainability, develop methods to help Schools and Administrative Units visualize progress towards emissions reduction goals; and impacts of energy conservation measures.
  8. Salesforce Sustainability Cloud Product Owner (PO) responsibilities include
  9. Understands and works with stakeholders to develop the business vision for the product;
  10. Manages the backlog of ideas, enhancements, and requests relating to the product; liaising with IT to monitor the ongoing “health” of the product;
  11. Supports development projects; representing the product in broader IT governance on behalf of the Program; being involved with the vendor relationship.
  12. Maintain the health of integration processes between Salesforce and internal and external reporting systems.
  13. Maintain the University’s inventory of regulated assets subject to environmental compliance regulations: (oil tanks, wastewater treatment systems, generators, boilers, refrigerant containing devices); Update assets and aspects in the salesforce database.
  14. Reconcile the EHS list with other databases.
  15. Monitor for industry changes and proactively work with University stakeholders to implement measures to integrate new or updated reporting requirements.
  16. Attend internal/external trainings, information sessions and conferences to identify best external practices.
  17. Assist with the implementation of additional environmental programs as appropriate.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

  • Contribute to the definition of systems requirements, conduct gap analysis, and identify feasible alternative solutions that meet defined business objectives
  • Perform user needs analysis, product evaluation, selection, customization, testing, implementation, and support
  • Participate in the development of plans and policies for a unit/school
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

*Basic Qualifications : 
  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills : 
  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience 
  • Demonstrated experience using a methodical approach to data gathering and data analysis.
  • Equivalent combination of education, military, and relevant experience to the minimum experience will also be considered.
  • Excellent relationship building, interpersonal, communication, writing, and presentation skills. 
  • Proven ability to think critically, innovate, solve problems, research effective solutions. 
  • Proven ability with data analysis, quality control, visualization and communication.
  • Must be able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced decentralized environment in a hands-on and proactive manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to work cross-functionally and to influence without authority. 
  • Ability to turn concepts into action. 
  • Proficiency in MS Office suite and database management. 
  • Ability to learn Harvard systems and web software quickly.

Emergency Status Designation: non-critical
This role is considered noncritical personnel and may be eligible for flexible work arrangements in accordance with departmental and university policies and manager approval.   This position will be based out of Cambridge, MA but will have the option to primarily work remotely.

Candidates must live in one of the following states: Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, Vermont, California, New York, Maryland.
