GENERAL SUMMARY
Under the direction of Professor Subramanian, manages daily operations of the research laboratory, including maintaining equipment, inventory, and protocols, purchasing, and related inquiries. Conducts experiments and performs routine and technically advanced assays. Primary responsibilities are to assist in experiments for research projects under supervision of the project head and as needed the PI of the laboratory. This includes collection of and accurate recording of procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents to conduct experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. Structures lab operations; prioritizes and assigns work to lower level personnel; monitors quality and quantity of work performed and sees that standards are met and maintained. Develops research methodologies within the parameters of experimental protocols and research objectives to allow quantitative and qualitative evaluation and interpretation of data obtained. Participates in the interpretation of the results of experiments through conferencing with senior lab personnel or principal investigator to review data compared to hypothesis, and researches methodology in instances of inexplicable data. Collaborates with principal investigator in writing material for publication; may present papers or appear as principal or secondary author in publications and ensures Public Access policy is adhered to. Also responsible for maintaining and distributing lab protein and recombinant plasmids, and work on Material Transfer Agreements.
 
RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:
  • Prepares reagents for use by members of the laboratory
  • Maintains records of all protocols all lab permits and staff assignments on protocols, permits and sponsored projects as necessary for efficient lab functions.
  • Works with Department Administrators to ensure all spending, permits and sponsored projects as well as HR documents are in proper order for the lab. 
  • Aids in maintaining information in databases for plasmids, cells, antibodies, and primers.
  • Organizes and accurately maintains written records of experimental procedures and data generated. 
  • Generates and interprets information obtained from graphs, charts, laboratory experiments, statistical summaries, and other data collection methods.  
  • Participates in and presents data at weekly lab meetings and journal clubs.
  • Assists in preparation and editing of manuscripts resulting from data generated in research projects.
  • Keeps up-to-date with literature directly relating to their project. Independently modifies techniques or learns new techniques as required for the project.
  • Ability to operate and maintain moderate-to-complex lab equipment, such as spectrophotometer, scintillation counter, centrifuges, and other equipment related to research.
  • Monitors compliance with laboratory safety practice.
  • Manages the MTA process for the lab ensuring all material which are requested in or out of the lab are reviewed and approved via the MTA review process; this person completes, submits and monitors the application process following through until materials are approved in or out of the lab.
  • Acts as Safety Officer for the lab.
  • Coordinates user work schedules for equipment, and procedure rooms.
  • Supervises operation of the lab.
  • Directs and supervises training of new lab employees and investigators in laboratory procedures.
  • Record Keeping Responsibilities: Teaches new employees how to use computerized records and database systems. Requires knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and other applications. Generates new databases for lab use. Manages several product databases for the lab.
  • Oversees inventory and supervises distribution of plasmids and antibodies to investigatory in and outside of the lab. 
  • Monitors and replenishes inventory, when needed.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
BS/BA in biology, cell biology, molecular biology, or related field required. AND 5 years progressive experience working in a laboratory environment either in the biotech industry or an academic institution is required.
