Communications and Production Assistant

 Key Functions
  • Produce video content (recording, editing, adding graphics, posting on multiple online platforms) for all NCUSCR uploads for U.S.-facing audiences, including videos of public programs, short interviews, special interview series, and short clips
  • Work closely with the director of communications and digital content manager on implementation of short- and long-term communications initiatives
  • Work with the communications team to develop strategies to increase the organization’s digital audience, expand digital media offerings, and manage curated content
  • Report to the director of communications

Digital Production
  • Edit videos and podcasts for upload and social media distribution
  • Use existing knowledge and ongoing research to develop interview subjects for video interviews and series, with particular focus on finding new sources, diversity, and Chinese sources
  • Research newsworthy topics and develop interview topics, questions, and potential subjects
  • Manage digital production outsourcing with external freelance editors and studios
  • Upload videos to strategically selected platforms depending on content, including YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and others
  • Manage livestreams and act as videography outsourcing manager for major events
  • Produce podcasts from most NCUSCR videos and upload to multiple platforms, including Libsyn and Soundcloud. Some audio editing required
  • Coordinate identification of short video highlights with intern staff and direct interns when needed for production assistance
  • Build web pages for digital media and edit where needed
  • Link post-event content, such as videos, podcasts, and transcripts to event pages

Additional Responsibilities
  • Design graphics and edit images for use in digital media, including interviews and short clips
  • Upload selected audio files to transcription platform; coordinate with interns for transcript editing and formatting; upload transcripts for public use
  • Graphic design support for special projects
  • Train interns and staff on content production and Adobe tools, as needed
  • Coordinate video and content production with communications coordinator for content sharing opportunities between U.S. and Chinese social media outreach
  • Maintain and update the organization’s letterhead
  • Design and update organizational business cards

Qualifications
  • Background in China studies and/or international studies preferred; knowledge of and interest in China, the U.S.-China relationship, and international relations preferred
  • Journalism, video production, graphic design, photo editing, or public relations experience is required
  • Knowledge of videography skills for in-person and remote production, including but not limited to video technology, editing programs, staging, etc.
  • Interest to learn new skills including video and audio production and editing, photo editing, graphic design as needed
  • Effective analytical and writing skills required
  • Ability to produce thoughtful content on deadline
  • Highly organized, detailed oriented, and strong time-management skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including ability to work well in a team and communicate effectively
  • Must be available to film some events in-person and occasionally during the evening
