The State of South Dakota Department of Social Services, Division of Medical Services, is looking for a motivated and skilled individual to fill our Deputy Director position overseeing operations in the South Dakota Medicaid program. The Division of Medical Services strives to make a significant impact in the lives of the citizens of South Dakota. The desired candidate will possess a strong commitment to service, rigorous attention to detail, and the ability to work in a fast-paced team-oriented environment.
This position will supervise a team of staff to organize, implement, and deliver broad program areas within the scope of the Medicaid program. The position includes ensuring compliance with all state and federal regulations, laws, and budgetary requirements; directing customer service delivery to providers and recipients of the Medicaid program; overseeing and administering Medicaid claims processing and provider enrollment; leading Medicaid program integrity analysis and development; serving as a liaison to share and evaluate information across interdepartmental and interdisciplinary teams and workgroups; representing Medicaid to internal and external stakeholders; and effectively communicating various philosophies, policies, program updates, and goals of the Division and Department. Successful candidates will be innovative, resourceful, and assist the Department of Social Services, Division of Medical Services in program enhancements necessary to best serve the children and families of South Dakota.
This position requires occasional in and out-of-state travel including evenings, nights, and weekends.
The Ideal Candidate will have:
Degree in political science, social work, public administration, health care administration or other health or human service-related field with supervisory or administrative experience is preferred.
Knowledge of:
  • managerial, administrative, and supervisory principles and practices;
  • techniques related to effective and efficient project development, implementation, and outcome measurement;
  • budget practices and procedures;
  • state and federal statutes and administrative rules related to Medicaid and CHIP;
  • Medicaid policies and billing procedures;
  • claims processing and billing systems;
  • data collection and analysis;
  • policy and procedure development.

  • prepare clear and concise documentation, reports, and correspondence which reflect relevant facts; and
  • motivate and provide effective leadership and management to staff.
