Director of Development

She’s the First is a global nonprofit that teams up with local organizations to make sure girls everywhere are educated, respected, and heard. 

Starting salary: $95,000-$115,000, commensurate with experience
Location: Anywhere in the U.S. 
Reporting Structure: This role reports to CEO/Co-Founder, Tammy Tibbetts
Job Classification: Full-time, exempt

Position Summary: The Director of Development’s primary role is to set strategy and successfully execute a multi-million dollar fundraising plan for She’s the First. This fundraising strategy will grow our grassroots online fundraising, major/high net worth donors, partnerships/sponsorships, and grants. In addition, this Director will hire and supervise a full-time Development Coordinator by Fall 2022 and supervise our part-time Donation Admin Assistant.

As a member of the STF Leadership Team, our Director of Development must also hold themselves and their department accountable to STF’s commitment to anti-oppression and actively contribute to the creation of a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture for the staff in the Global North and South.

Our Director of Development is eager to join a smaller team where they can avoid the bureaucracy of larger organizations and have profound influence over our outcomes. You have an entrepreneurial drive and are excited to take She’s the First to the next level on our trajectory to become one of the most widely known and respected girls’ rights organizations in the world.  

With you on the team, She’s the First will find ourselves with more significant and sustainable funding after your first year, with stronger data on our donors, and with a development team of at least 2-3 part/full-time staffers who love having you as their boss.

* Salary in this range will be determined based on set criteria, including years of experience, management experience, and level of accountability for an organizational budget.

Key Responsibilities for the Director of Development include:
  • Set a multi-year, comprehensive development strategy that can support a budget of $2M and sustainable growth
  • Create plans for fundraising campaigns and events, supported with clear rationale, realistic pipelines and budgets, and an eye for renewable commitments
  • Ensure stewardship of donors of all levels, establishing goals and timelines
  • Effectively hire and manage the development team and coach other key stakeholders involved in cultivation and asks
  • Actively participate in STF’s commitment to anti-oppression, anti-racism, and girl-centeredness through your leadership decisions and example you set
  • Write compelling donation appeals with integrity; develop narratives that demonstrate organizational impact and urgency
  • Project manage STF’s foundation grant pipeline, collaborating with the Programs team on submissions that align with budgets and goals
  • Collaborate with the CEO to increase Board involvement in fundraising
  • Improve processes to increase efficiency

Requirements:
  • Passion and excitement for the mission
  • Resident of the United States, with a desire to travel to New York City for donor meetings and events, up to 6 times per year
  • Proven ability to build long-term relationships with a wide range of people, including Board members
  • Background in donor prospecting and research
  • Experience soliciting major gifts and engaging with high net-worth individuals
  • Experience setting strategy for live and digital events and contributing to event production
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, with ability to oversee design and production of attractive fundraising materials
  • Ability to use data to make decisions and tell stories
  • Experience managing staff and consultants as well as working horizontally across Communications / Programs teams
