Epidemiology and Data Management Fellowship

An ORISE fellowship opportunity is available with the COVID-19 Global Migration Task Force Maritime Unit (MU) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Atlanta, GA. This is a full-time, one-year, stipend-supported opportunity. Start date is flexible but no later than February 15, 2022.

The GMTF MU Epidemiology/Data Management Team collects COVID-19 and COVID-like illness data submitted to CDC from cruise ships in U.S. jurisdictions, analyzes COVID-19 cruise ship data, and disseminates these data in various formats to internal and external partners/stakeholders. MU’s work is highly visible, responding to high-level leadership and media inquiries. Our ideal fellow candidate will be someone who has the interest in operating and maintaining a surveillance platform to facilitate epidemiology and public health response in a complex, fast-paced government environment.

We seek an ORISE fellow to receive the following training opportunity:

You will learn how to:
Ideal qualifications/experience include:
• Process and clean data from a surveillance and data management system
• Extract and track data from multiple sources
• Create and perform quality checks
• Conceive and prepare scientific articles, technical reports, and data files for publication or presentation
• Work with data visualization specialists to prepare data for dashboards, including learning dashboard creation skills
• Triage and organize status reports and other communications from ships
• Edit and update standard operating procedures and other written material

Ideal Experience/Qualifications include:
• Bachelor’s or Master’s with a quantitative focus, experience with disease epidemiology helpful
• Intermediate experience with R and RStudio, REDCap programming, and
o Writing and editing functions within R with a specialty in looping functions
o Coding in R Markdown
• Data system design, working with disparate data sources and messy data
• Creating data visualizations and awareness of best practices
• Communicating with technical and non-technical audiences
• Interpersonal skills to establish and maintain effective working relationships
• Collaborative work, in a fast-paced, environment
• Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail

Organizational Description:
This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the US Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education, was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. The initial appointment can be up to one year but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC contingent on the availability of funds. The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. The appointment is full-time at CDC in the Atlanta, Georgia, area. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE, or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits.
