This role will assist with legal matters related to contract law, business operations, nonprofit law, and general corporate governance.

What will you do as a Legal Counsel?
  • Provide legal advice and support on a broad range of matters, including contract drafting, review and negotiation, legal risk mitigation, employment, non-profit governance, non-profit fundraising, wills, trusts and estates, data privacy, intellectual property, government relations and other.
  • Develop and maintain internal policies and practices that align with current compliance and regulatory landscapes
  • Monitor organizational policies and practices for compliance with laws, rules, regulations and policies
  • Interface with and manage outside counsel
  • Anticipate and assess complex legal issues and provide advice and guidance to JDC’s management regarding legal matters
  • Review, edit, draft, and prepare legal documents for, including contracts, policies, memos, resolutions and other documents
  • Work cross-functionally with staff at all levels of the organization on relevant legal matters
  • Familiarize yourself with JDC’s global mission and work
  • Other related duties as assigned
 
What qualifications do you need to be our Assistant General Counsel?
  • At least five years of relevant legal experience in-house and/or at a law firm, preferably advising exempt organizations
  • Experience advising manager-level colleagues or clients required; experience working with senior leaders a plus
  • J.D. degree from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one State Bar with the ability to obtain New York In-House Counsel status
  • Strong knowledge of U. S. transactional law; knowledge of Israeli or other international legal environments is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to multi-task
  • Strong relational skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of staff and management
  • Ability to find creative solutions and bring a business partner/thought partner approach to working with colleagues
  • Sound judgment, discretion, and the ability to gain the confidence of colleagues
  • Ability to work on one’s own and to oversee multiple projects while prioritizing work effectively
  • Aware of positional power and privilege (both personally and professionally) and its attendant impacts
  • All-hands-on-deck approach, willingness to take on whatever is needed
  • Welcomes constructive feedback and takes ownership for mistakes
  • Passion for humanitarian work and/or global Jewish service strongly preferred
 
Additional Details
  • Employment Type: Full-Time
  • Hours: 35 hours/week, 8:45 AM – 4:45PM
  • Location: New York, NY; 2 days/week on-site, up to 3 days/week work from home
  • Reports to: General Counsel and Chief Compliance Officer

What are the compensation and benefits for an Assistant General Counsel?
  • This a full-time, salaried position paid semi-monthly. This role is exempt per the FLSA.
