Archives / Audience Engagement Intern

Two Archives / Audience Engagement Interns work alongside the Director of Preservation and Associate Archivist to provide public access to the Pillow’s extensive collection of videos, photographs, books, and other historical materials.

Working in a newly-expanded facility open six days a week, the interns welcome the public to Blake’s Barn for PillowTalks and to help visitors enjoy the Archives in accordance with COVID-19 safety protocols. Interns also partner with the Video team to prepare access copies of festival documentation to be viewed in the Norton Owen Reading Room and work with prominent dance scholars on various aspects related to the Pillow’s Audience Engagement Program.
The early weeks of the internship are devoted to pre-festival responsibilities such as assisting with mounting exhibitions, preparing the Reading Room for the public, basic archival processing, and collection management. During the Festival, interns interact with artists, faculty, students, staff, and the general public in the Reading Room by answering questions, promoting/recommending materials, and providing excellent customer service. Other major contributions include creating database records that describe the collection’s moving images and books using Collective Access software, tracking and analyzing usage data, making displays and signage, and managing all other aspects of Blake’s Barn.
Interacting with the public is a primary activity, and interns should be outgoing and comfortable speaking with strangers. Candidates should be detail-oriented, self-motivated, knowledgeable in dance, and comfortable working with computers, as well as possessing exceptional interpersonal, writing, and search skills. Experience in cataloging/data entry or a background in libraries or archives is a plus.
COVID full vaccination is required as a condition of employment for all staff, interns, and fellows.
