CDC Data Analysis Fellowship

CDC Office and Location: A research fellowship is available with the Global Immunization Division (GID) within the Center for Global Health (CGH) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) located in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. CDC works to protect America from health, safety and security threats, both foreign and in the U.S. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.

CDC’s Global Immunization Division (GID) is involved in one of the most effective of all global public health missions – vaccination against deadly diseases – which saves the lives of 2 to 3 million people every year. Based in Atlanta GA, GID works closely with a wide variety of partners to protect global citizens against contagious and life-threatening vaccine-preventable diseases. GID has four branches, this position will be in the Strategic Information and Workforce Development (SIWD) branch, on the Strategic Information (SI) Team.

Research Project: The purpose of the project is to support analysis of quantitative and qualitative data and develop analytical solutions to enhance the use of immunization-related data for action for various projects in the SIWD branch. The participant will provide technical support to improve immunization information systems and workforce capacity in low- and middle –income countries. The participant selected for this position may also have opportunities to support additional projects related to evaluation and operations research, as necessary. The project may require travel to low- and middle-income countries to provide technical assistance. Under the guidance of the team lead and technical staff, the participant will provide support and learn technical skills related to the following: 
  • Ensuring data quality, accuracy, and completeness 
  • Supporting the development of appropriate data analysis plans 
  • Conducting exploratory and/or statistical analysis of quantitative and qualitative data  
  • Enhancing existing data collection, management, and analysis systems to streamline implementation of monitoring and evaluation activities and use of findings 
  • Supporting oversight in organization and management of complex programmatic data 
  • Participating in training of project personnel in-country on data related activities 
  • Potential to co-author scientific papers for publication 
  • Potential support to COVID-19 International Task Force (ITF)  
  • Up to 20% of international travel for project support 

Learning Objectives:
  • Improve quantitative and qualitative data analytic skills
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of analytic solutions to enhance data quality at different health levels in low- and middle- income countries
  • Participate in the development of monitoring and evaluation activities, and to interpret and report data to CDC partners or ministries of health
  • Gain insights into the organization and management of complex programmatic data 
  • Contribute to data capacity building activities in low- and middle- income countries
  • Collaborate with mentor(s) to gain knowledge to respond to CDC data requests and/or technical assistance with reports/manuscripts

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: February 2022.  Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.

Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.

Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.

Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.

ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
