GENERAL SUMMARY/ OVERVIEW STATEMENT
 
Our broad research aims include defining where and how general anesthetics act at the molecular scale and the discovery and characterization of new sedative-hypnotic drugs that may have clinical value. 
The laboratory Research Technician Level 1 (RT-1) is a full-time position for a period of two or more years and provides opportunities for learning about clinical activities and related research. Primary responsibilities are to assist in or independently perform experiments for research projects under supervision of senior scientists and the laboratory PI. This includes collection of and accurate recording of lab procedures and results, maintenance of databases used in the lab, ordering necessary reagents and materials for experiments, and participation in joint upkeep of the lab. The RT-1 will also maintain a detailed and current laboratory notebook of experimental procedures, conditions, and results, and present new findings at weekly lab meetings. This position requires a person who has Bachelor degree in a scientific discipline with laboratory classes, pays attention to details, is capable of working independently after training, possesses good verbal and written communication skills, and works well as part of a team. Candidates with research experience, advanced science and math coursework and computer skills will be most competitive. 
 

PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
 
Responsibilities comprise, but are not limited to:
  • The RT-1 will work under the supervision of a senior research technologist, postdoctoral researcher, or principal investigator on assigned projects. 
  • The RT-1 will perform basic laboratory functions, including solution preparation, animal procedures, laboratory maintenance and clean-up. 
  • The RT-1 will receive training in experimental techniques such as voltage-clamp electrophysiology, molecular biology procedures, chemical modification of proteins, CRISPR gene editing, and zebrafish behavioral studies.
  • The RT-1 will perform experiments using these techniques. 
  • The RT-1 will maintain a laboratory notebook detailing experimental work and results, and report on his/her data and results at weekly laboratory meetings. 
  • The RT-1 will also learn basic statistical data analysis techniques and strategies for creation of figures for publication or other forms of communication of scientific results.
 
 
SKILLS/ABILITIES/COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:
  • Communicates fluently in spoken and written English. 
  • Is familiar and experienced with current Microsoft operating systems, word-processing and spreadsheet software. 
  • Facility with computer programs, mathematical modeling, and statistical analysis is highly valued.
  • Will be required to undergo CCM training in animal handling and use for experiments.
  • Prior research experience is preferred.

EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Must have an undergraduate degree in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, or another scientific discipline that includes laboratory class experience. 
  • Must have completed algebra and advanced geometry. Knowledge of calculus, statistics, and linear algebra is preferred.
  • Experience with computer programs for statistical analysis, and video analysis with Matlab is highly desired.
  • Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be self-motivated and capable of independent work.
  • Previous basic or computational research experience is highly desirable
 
 
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Duties will be performed in a basic and translational science research laboratory located in the MGH hospital campus. No direct patient contact will be required. 
  • Work will be conducted over a forty-hour workweek- actual schedule is negotiable.
  • Opportunities to observe general anesthesia during clinical procedures may be requested.
